The following health alert is from the FDA on July 30, 2003.
SCHWARTZ APPETIZING INC. located at 4824 16th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, is recalling 7 oz. containers of
SCHMALTZ HERRING, CODE 08/06, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The 7 oz. containers of SCHMALTZ HERRING were sold to retail customers in Monroe and Brooklyn, New York, and through the firm’s own retail store.
The product was sold in plastic containers with a stick-on label bearing code date “08/06” (on the bottom of the container) and UPC number 7 87434 22222 1.
The recall was the result of routine sampling by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which revealed that the finished product contained the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.
Consumers who have purchased SCHMALTZ HERRING, CODE 08/06, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-718-851-1011.
