Consumer Kashrut Alerts

The following insect infestation alert is from Rabbi Wagshal on November 15, 2013.

Mashgichim have recently checked raw chestnuts in the New York Metro area, and found high levels of infestation.
Checking procedure: Halve the raw nut; if small grey granules are spotted (either in the center or underneath the inner, soft shell) discard it. (Worms may be seen in such cases)
Baked or cooked chestnuts are very difficult to check, since the granules (and the worm itself) change colors, and are very similar to the nut itself."
