Kosher Bread Alert

October 14, 2020 from the Kof-K in response to a question from the editor:

Bimbo Bakery has decided to remove the KOF-K kosher emblem from many of their breads. The company is reconsidering the decision and concerned consumers should call (800) 984-0989 and let the company know of your concern.

Updated Information on kosher breads

January 24, 2019 - from the Kof-K: After an overwhelming response from consumers Bimbo USA has decided to remain kosher on many of the items that were slated for decertification.

December 31, 2018 - The following information is from the COR Detroit
BIMBO BAKERIES, owner of many brands of bread and buns, including ARNOLD, BEEFSTEAK, BIMBO, BROWNBERRY, FREIHOFER’S, OROWEAT, SARA LEE, STROEHMANN and others, plus many regional supermarket / private label brands, has made a decision to remove Kosher certification from many of its products, in order to have the flexibility to produce them on non-certified factory lines. Therefore, many products that in the past bore the OU or Kof-K symbol no longer do, or will stop certification at some point in the future. Every package should be carefully checked for the symbol on every purchase. Consumers can voice their concerns to Bimbo at 800-984-0989.
No changes are planned at this time for Thomas and Entenmann’s products, or for Arnold Rye Bread and Levy’s Rye Bread. They continue to be certified as in the past, when bearing the OU symbol.

November 28, 2018 - The following information is from the Atlanta Kashruth Commission

• Kosher Breads: Recently some of the national bread manufacturers have discontinued producing kosher breads in this area. There is a campaign to try and remedy this. If you wish you may call Bimbo Bakeries at: 1-800-984-0989 and request that they bring back kosher bread.
  In the meantime there are some kosher bread options (when bearing kosher certification):
  • Dave’s Killer Bread
  • Cobblestone Bread Company
  • Mrs. Freshley’s

• Pas Yisroel: Breads baked in AKC certified bakeries (Kroger, Publix) are pas yisroel and are labeled pas yisroel. These bakeries also sell breads from other kosher bakeries in the kosher bread area. These breads may or may not be pas yisroel. This includes Goldminer and Wholesome Harvest breads (KOF-K), and Publix Pretzel Bread.
