The following dairy allergy alert is from the FDA dated January 16, 2015.

Aron Streit, Inc. of New York, NY is recalling its .5 ounce packages of "Streit's Dark Chocolate Coins" because they may contain undeclared milk allergens.
The product comes in .5 ounce mesh bags marked with Code:1814 on the label. The recalled "Streit's Dark Chocolate Coins" were imported by Streit's and distributed nationwide in retail stores.
The recall was initiated after a consumer complained of an allergic reaction. Sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of undeclared milk allergens in the .5 ounce mesh bags of "Streit's Dark Chocolate Coins", which did not declare a milk ingredient on the label.
Consumers who have purchased .5 ounce mesh bags of "Streit's Dark Chocolate Coins" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 212-475-7000.


The following kashrus alert is from the OU on November 19, 2014.

Streit's Kids Dark Chocolate Coins and Kids Milk Chocolate Coins, Aron Streit Inc. New York, NY: The Orthodox Union does not certify Streit’s Chocolate Coins (made in Turkey). The Orthodox Union is treating these products as Non-Kosher products. Further, persons who are allergic to milk products should not rely on the OU mark to assume that the dark chocolate product is dairy free. Corrective measures are being implemented.
From the Kof-K: This product was produced without authorization by the manufacturer. Streits is recalling and destroying the product.

The following health alert is from the CFIA on January 28, 2015 and the http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm432417.htm" target='fda'>FDA on January 29, 2015.

Freeland Foods, Inc. of San Jose, CA is voluntarily recalling the Go Raw Organic Sunflower Seed, UPC number 8 59888 00009 7 with lot number “Enjoy before August 22, 2015 R5,” because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Based upon a random sampling, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (“CFIA”) has determined that the Go Raw Brand Organic Sunflower Seed, UPC number 8 59888 00009 7, lot number “Enjoy before August 22, 2015 R5,” sold in 1 lb. (454 g) re-sealable plastic bags sold by Ecomax, tested positive for Salmonella. At this time, this is the only lot that is affected by this recall.
Effective immediately, Freeland Foods will conduct a precautionary voluntary recall to the consumer level of all Go Raw Brand Organic Sunflower Seed packages bearing the UPC 8 59888 00009 7 and “Enjoy Before August 22, 2015 R5” in the United States. Freeland Foods asks that consumers who have purchased this product destroy or return to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The Go Raw Organic Sunflower Seed with the lot number “Enjoy before August 22, 2015 R5,” was distributed nationwide and Canada through distributors, retailers and direct customers.

The following health alert is from the CFIA on January 15, 2015 and the FDA on January 23, 2015.

Freeland Foods, Inc. of San Jose, CA is voluntarily recalling the Go Raw Organic Spicy Seed Mix, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The following peanut allergy alert is from the FDA on January 16,2015.

Tarrier Foods of Columbus, OH is recalling 316 cases of Chopped Twix item 0807, because it may contain undeclared peanuts and eggs.
The Chopped Twix product was distributed to wholesale warehouses in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Florida where it was distributed to foodservices.
The product can be identified by the item number 0870 on the outside of the case. The inside contains two bags in white film marked "CHOPPED TWIX Lot 087034314."
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing peanuts and eggs was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts and egg on the ingredient statement. Subsequent investigations are being performed to determine the temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes."
Consumers who have purchased Chopped Twix lot code 080734314 are urged to return it to the distributor for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Tarrier Food's Customer Service at (614) 876-8595.

The following shmitta information and clarification is from the the editor on January 22, 2015.

Shmitta, When do Fruits take on the status of Shmitta?

This year 5775 is a shmitta year in Israel. It is a mitzvah to not till the land from Rosh HaShana till the evening before the next Rosh HaShana. Vegetables in the marketplace have started growing during the shmitta year had have the status of shiviis.

Migdaltorah.org stated the "Fruits get the staus of shiviis whey the bud duing the shiviis year. As such, there are no restrictions on the purchase of fruits until the end of winter. Slowly, as these fruits are used up, fruits with Kedushas Sheviis will enter the commercial marketplace."
Kashrut.com has links to articles from a number about Shmitta as well charts published by the London Beth Din and the Star-K at www.kashrut.com/consumer/vegetables/#SCHMITTA . The London Beth Din lists the first fruits being shiviis as peaches and nectarines in February. We don't typically see Israeli peaches and nectarines in the US. Grapefruits, oranges and persimmons will attain the shivvis status in September or October, 2015. Dates in the market will have the shivvis status in August, 2015.
