Kashrut Alert – King Soopers Bread and Buns

April 26, 2020 from the Scroll-K:

Due to many questions regarding this ongoing issue, we are re-issuing this alert for the benefit of the public.
Due to a change in packaging, King Soopers breads and buns (including these brands: Good to Dough®, King Soopers®, Kroger®, Private Selection®, Simple Truth®) are certified kosher only when the Scroll K symbol is printed in the ink-jetted production code.
Any packaged of the above-mentioned items without the Scroll K symbol are not certified kosher.

Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O103: Clover Sprouts (February 2020)- outbreak over

April 22 from the FDA:

Chicago Indoor Garden recalled all products containing Red Clover sprouts. FDA recommends that consumers not eat the following recalled items with “Best By” dates between 12/1/2019 and 3/12/2020 that were distributed to Coosemans Chicago Inc., Battaglia Distributing, Living Waters Farms, and Whole Foods throughout the Midwest:

Recalled products are now past their “Best By” dates and should be thrown away.

Raw and lightly cooked sprouts are a known source of foodborne illness. We recommend that consumers, restaurants, and other retailers always follow food safety practices to avoid illness from eating sprouts.Generally, it is recommended that children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with weakened immune systems should avoid eating raw sprouts of any kind. Background

FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, investigated an outbreak of 51 illnesses caused by E. coli O103 in Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming linked to clover sprouts.

FDA’s investigation is now complete, and CDC has declared this outbreak over.

The FDA's analysis of a sample of Chicago Indoor Garden’s sprouts identified the presence of E. coli O103. Whole Genome Sequencing of this bacteria showed that it matches the current outbreak strain. The sample also matches the outbreak strain from the November-December 2019 outbreak in Iowa, which was associated with sprouts from various Jimmy John’s restaurants.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, we are here Monday through Friday from 7am-3:30pm Central. Please contact our office at 773-772-5858 with any questions or concerns.

March 19, 2020 from the FDA: An FDA traceback investigation has shown that a common seed lot was used to grow the sprouts recalled by Chicago Indoor Garden and sprouts served at some Jimmy John’s locations during this outbreak and the outbreak in 2019.

Insect infestation alert - Baby Spinach

April 8, 2020 from cRc:

Due to the usually high infestation level of baby spinach, we have just determined that the usual washing process has not been sufficient even when bought under cRc supervision (for example Star Catering baby spinach). Therefore, before using this baby spinach, the spinach should be soaked in very soapy water, and agitated for a minute or so. Then one should remove the spinach and place it into a bowl of plain clean water. Again, agitate the spinach in the plain water for a minute or so and then it can be used.as is, If the spinach has already been cooked in a liquid there is halachik basis to allow it to be consumed as is.
