The following insect infestation alert is from Rabbi Wagshal on November 15, 2013.

Mashgichim have recently checked raw chestnuts in the New York Metro area, and found high levels of infestation.
Checking procedure: Halve the raw nut; if small grey granules are spotted (either in the center or underneath the inner, soft shell) discard it. (Worms may be seen in such cases)
Baked or cooked chestnuts are very difficult to check, since the granules (and the worm itself) change colors, and are very similar to the nut itself."

The following kashrus alert is from the OU dated November 15, 2013.

Smart Balance Spreads, GFA Brands: Most Smart Balance products are certified as OU Pareve, a few are certified as OU D. In order to avoid consumer confusion, the packaging for the dairy products will have OU Dairy spelled out in a larger font than the current OU D designation. Consumers are urged to always check each product they are purchasing for the kosher symbol.

The following kashrus alert is from the Kosherquest.org on November 3, 2013 with additional information from the Seattle Vaad and posted on November 12, 2013.

Please be advised that Butterflake Rolls by Schwartz Brothers Bakery (from Seattle) was incorrectly labeled with the Vaad HaRabanim of Greater Seattle Space Needle KD symbol. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT CERTIFIED BY THE SEATTLE VAAD. Corrective measures are being taken.

From the Seattle Vaad:

  • A list of kosher product produced by Schwartz Bakery is at www.seattlevaad.org/portfolio/schwartz-brothers-bakery.
  • FYI: (because we were asked) the food item is kosher dairy in terms of ingredients, but this item is not certified by the Va’ad halachically due to it being a bread roll & that is dairy.

The following Canadian kashrus advisory is from the COR on November 8, 2013.

Please be advised that due to a manufacturing change in a particular plant, Kellogg’s All Brand Buds will now be designated as “Dairy Equipment” (DE). All Bran Buds that currently carry the standard COR (pareve) symbol were produced before this change and remain pareve. Please also note that other Kellogg’s cereals are produced in a separate plant and are therefore not affected by this manufacturing change and remain pareve.

Ed. note (from the KVH): Bran buds in the USA have been KD (DE) for quite some time.
