The following revised kashrus information regarding is from the Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis on Sept. 11, 2013.

The Vaad Hoeir usually does not send out a Kashrus Alert when specific products become kosher certified. However, due to the popularity of the following items and the numerous calls we have received as to their kosher status, we wanted to let the public know that due to a change in kosher certification, the Vaad Hoeir now accepts these products. They may be regarded as kosher even without the RCC (Rabbinical Council of California) kosher symbol on the bottles or even with the old kosher symbol.
Products:

  • Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce
  • Sambal Oelek
  • Chili Garlic Sauce
Manufactured by Huy Fong Foods, Rosemead, CA

The following kashrus information regarding is Rabbi Eiditz on August 30, 2013.

"Special alert: Some kashrus agencies take over a kosher supervision but their logo does not appear for some time on the product due to a company’s desire to use up old labels or containers. This is the case with the Sriracha sauce bearing the Shield Mogen David K from Philadelphia which has been certified for over a year by the RCC but does not bear their label until all of the bottles will be used up. We do not recommend products bearing the previous symbol. "

"Another such confusing case is the Bob’s Red Mill products bearing the underlined K. Rabbi Teichman has been certifying that product for over a year as well but the old symbol remains on the product. The KIB does not recommend the previous certifications on both products. All of the Bob’s Red Mill products bearing the Underline K are reliably certified by Rabbi Teichman. Other products bearing that symbol remain not recommended."

The following kashrus information regarding is Rabbi Eiditz and the cRc on August 30, 2013.

Kirkland Signature brand frozen Blueberries/Raspberries/Strawberries (sold at Costco stores) bears a BCK symbol and the Hebrew words, "zakuk l’bedikas toloyim" (needs to be checked for insects). The certification is for the processing agents only. While the company checks for insects, this does NOT meet the halachic requirement, and those who require checking on frozen berries will need to check these too. In the future the Hebrew words will be replaced by an English statement: "toloyim inspection required".

The following Yoshon information regarding is Rabbi Eiditz on August 30, 2013.

START OF THE CHODOSH SEASON

According to this week’s report from the US Department of Agriculture, the delayed start of the harvest of the Chodosh crops is finally in full swing. Based on these reports, I will recommend the following cutoffs for the forthcoming Chodosh season:

  • Freshly baked items using spring wheat, including breads, challahs, bagels, rolls, pizza and some cakes and cookies may be Chodosh in the Midwest after the PURCHASE DATE of Aug 18. Elsewhere in the US, this date would be Aug 25. Packaged foods from spring wheat may be Chodosh after the PACKING date of Aug 18, or the PURCHASE date of Sept 1.
  • Noodles and pasta may be Chodosh after the PACKING date of Aug 25 and the PURCHASE date of Sept 8.
  • Barley, such as pearled barley, may be Chodosh after the PACKING date of Aug 18 and PURCHASE date of Sept 1.
  • Oats: According to the O-U all oats used in cereals may have a Chodosh PACKING date of Sept 1 or later, PURCHASE DATE of Sept 15 or later. The oats in General Mills cereals, such as the oats in Cheerios, this Chodosh PACKING date is Oct 1 or later, PURCHASE DATE of Oct 15 or later. (These dates may be revised to a later time in the future. These dates also apply for General Mills cereals sold under the Nestle label in Israel.) This includes all oats used in both cold cereals that one eats with cold milk or hot cereals such as cooked oatmeal. The O-U advisory does not apply to oats used in other products such as oat flour used in cookies. For such non-cereal products our recommended oats cutoff is the PACKING date of Aug 4 and the PURCHASE date of Aug 28. Rabbi Yoseph Herman, Telephone Hot Line 718-305-5133
