The following Mexican kashrus alert is from the OU on October 15, 2012.

Terana, a Mexican food distributor, placed a Spanish label with an OU symbol on a non certified imported Cirio Ragu Bolognese sauce product. The Orthodox Union does not certify this Cirio sauce. This product was sold in Mexico and corrective measures have been implemented.

The following kashrus and dairy and pecan allergy alert is from the OU and the FDA posted on October 17, 2012 and October 20, 2012.

OU alert: Wegmans Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix is certified by the Orthodox Union as an OU-D dairy product. Some products were labeled with an OU mark, without the D - Dairy designation. This product was withdrawn from the marketplace. Consumers who purchased this product prior to the withdrawal should consider it a dairy product.

FDA Alert: The Raymond-Hadley Corp. of Spencer, NY is expanding the recall of Wegmans Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix 17.2OZ, UPC 077890283363, to include possible contamination of undeclared allergen Pecans (Tree Nuts). This product already had been recalled because they may be contaminated with the undeclared allergen Milk. People who have an allergy to milk or pecans run the risk of serious, or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
Wegmans 17.2oz Double Chocolate Brownie mixes were distributed in the United States through the Wegmans retail stores.
The mixes are packaged under the Wegmans brand in chipboard boxes with the following markings on the packages: ENJOY BY OCT 30 2014 through MAR 17 2014.
The voluntary recall was initiated after it was discovered that chocolate chunks used in the mix were received in packaging that did not reveal the presence of the allergen milk and pecans. Subsequent investigation confirms milk and pecans as a possible cross-contaminate in the chocolate chunks used in the brownie mixes.
Consumers who have purchased the product listed above are urged to return it to Wegmans for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the manufacturer at 1-800-252-2220, Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm EDT.

"We hereby wish to advise that blueberries from Argentina have been checked and found to be highly infested. It is therefore not permissible to eat blueberries from Argentina until further notice."

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 17, 2012.

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling a limited number of cases of Dole American Blend salad in 12 oz. bags, coded A275208A or B, with Use-by date of October 17 and UPC 7143000933, due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.
The product code and Use-by date are in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode. The salads were distributed in 10 U.S. states (Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin).
No other salads are included in the recall. Only the specific Product Codes, UPC codes and October 17, 2012 Use-by date identified above are included in the recall. Consumers who have any remaining product with these Product Codes should not consume it, but rather discard it. Retailers and consumers with questions may call the Dole Food Company Consumer Response Center at (800) 356-3111, which is open 8:00 am to 3:00 pm (PT) Monday - Friday.

The following additional information on Canadian health alert is from the MK Kosher Certification on October 16, 2012.

Amsellem meat shop would like to reassure the community following a recall on 4 of its deli products These 4 deli products are suspected to have been in contact with raw meat on October 3 due to the inexperience of a new employee.
The products are Laos Deli, Milano Deli, Smoked Salami, Veal Supreme sliced by an employee per customer’s order sold on October 3rd 2012 inclusively.


The following Canadian health alert is from the MK Kosher Certification and CVT News on October 15, 2012.

Amsellem butcher/deli shop at 5450 Westminster Ave in Cote St. Luc is recalling several meats because they may be contaminated with Listeria. Cold cuts bought from a Montreal-area deli and butcher may not be safe to eat. Quebec's food inspection ministry says multiple products sold at Amsellem butcher shop, located at 5450 Westminster Ave. in Cote St. Luc, may be contaminated with Listeria-causing bacteria.
The suspect meats are:

  • anything produced by Charcuterie Laost
  • anything produced by Charcuterie Milano
  • Smoked sausage
  • Veal Supreme
All of these items would have been cut or sliced to order for customers. and all were sold until Oct. 3, 2012. Anyone who has these items in their home should throw them out and not eat them. Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria likely will not look or smell spoiled. Listeria is a deadly bacteria that can cause breathing problems, high fevers, headaches, miscarriages and death.

Please be advised that two lot numbers (#152-12 and #207-12) of CENTURY DAIRY BRAND ROCKY ROAD ICE CREAM (made by Mikawaya - Vernon, CA) were mistakenly labeled as OK-D. OK Kosher Certification does not certify this product as it contains non kosher ingredients. Product has been recalled and relabeled.
