The label for Stop & Shop Garlic Texas Toast, sold in KVH-supervised In-store Bakeries, was mistakenly marked in some stores KVH-pareve. There is whey in the item and the item should be marked KVH-Dairy. Immidiate action has been taken and all future items are correctly marked.

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 19, 2011.

Taylor Farms Retail Inc. is initiating a voluntary, precautionary recall of 3,265 cases of various salad blends with the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella following a random test conducted on a finished package of spinach by the State of Washington Department of Agriculture. The bagged salad products subject to the recall include:

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 19, 2011.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) are investigating illnesses in at least six people in Minnesota that are connected with a recall of organic shell eggs due to contamination with Salmonella Enteritidis. The contaminated eggs were traced back by the MDA to Larry Schultz Organic Farm of Owatonna, where environmental testing confirmed the presence of Salmonella Enteritidis. Larry Schultz Organic Farm is cooperating with the MDA investigation and has issued a voluntary recall of the products.
Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to restaurants, grocery stores, food wholesalers and foodservice companies in MM, WI and MI. Eggs from Larry Schultz Organic Farm are packaged under the following brand names: Lunds & Byerly's Organic, Kowalski’s Organic, and Larry Schultz Organic Farm. Eggs are packed in bulk and varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons). Full product descriptions and a list of grocery stores where these products were sold can be found at www.mda.state.mn.us. Cartons bearing Plant Number 0630 or a “Sell by” date are not included in this recall.
To prevent illness, it is important for consumers to cook eggs thoroughly before eating in order to destroy any Salmonella or other bacteria. Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Brands included in the recall are as follows:

  • Larry Schultz Organic Farm Label Extra large Cartoned On or Before Jullian date "286 EXP NOV 12" or "286 NOV12" The " " is as it appears on the carton. (if the carton has a plant number or any additional numbers or letters it is not part of the recall) If the carton has a "Sell by" date it is NOT recalled.
  • Larry Schultz Organic Farm Label Large Cartoned On or Before Jullian date "286 EXP NOV 12" or "286 NOV12" The " " is as it appears on the carton. (if the carton has a plant number or any additional numbers or letters it is not part of the recall) If the carton has a "Sell by" date it is NOT recalled.
  • Larry Schultz Organic Farm Label Jumbo Cartoned On or Before Jullian date "286 EXP NOV 12" or "286 NOV12" The " " is as it appears on the carton.

The following sesame allergy alert is from a reader on October 12, 2011.

Gefen Italian Style Bread crumbs contain sesame seeds which are not marked on the ingredient list.
Ed. note: Sesame seeds are an allergen that is not required to be labeled in the United States, but is required to be labeled in Canada.

The following kashrus notification is from Kosher Miami on October 18, 2011.

"Effective today, Tuesday October 18, 2011, Pistachio Grill located at 740 41st Street in Miami Beach is under new ownership and is NO LONGER under Kosher Miami supervision and certification. We have not been asked by the new owners to give certification to them, and we are not sure how they plan to operate the restaurant, i.e. Kosher or Not Kosher."

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 13, 2011.

River Ranch Fresh Foods, Salinas, CA a producer of bagged salad mix is voluntarily recalling 2,100 cases distributed under Hy-Vee salads, Giant Eagle's "Farmers Market store brands in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Iowa because of the potential that some packages may be contaminated with listeria. The lettuce has a "best if sold by" date of Oct. 14. River Ranch Fresh Foods of Salinas issued the recall after random tests indicated the presence of the listeria organism in bagged lettuce sold for the Giant Eagle chain. The company recalled all lettuce bagged on Sept. 27.

The following kashrus alert is from the OU on October 12, 2011.

Pic N Pay - Avenue M in Brooklyn NY: Pic N Pay repacked and sold chickens, placing the OU on the repackaged product. The Orthodox Union did not certify Pic N Pay and such use of the OU was unauthorized. Pic N Pay has stopped using the OU on repackaged chicken.

The following kashrus advisory is from the OU on October 12, 2011.

Bean & Body Canned Coffee Drinks: Some of the cans are labeled with a regular OU, instead of an OU-D. The products are clearly dairy as listed on the ingredient panel. Corrective action is being taken.

The following non-mevushal wine alert is from the Scroll-K on October 9, 2011.

Many Carmel Wines are not mevushal. The same type of wine may have different versions and vintages, of which some are mevushal and some are not mevushal. Carmel Young-Moscato and Carmel Young-Camrigano wines’ 2009 vintage states “Not Mevushal”, but their 2010 vintage states "Mevushal". Please check the label of each individual bottle for its correct status.

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 7, 2011.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today said that whole milk with an expiration of October 22, 2011 from Farmers All Natural Creamery in Wellman, Iowa is the subject of a voluntary recall due to concerns that at least some of the milk from that facility may not have been properly pasteurized. Farmers All Natural Creamery believes 954 gallons of milk have been sold to four distributors; UNFI (Aurora, CO), UNFI (Lancaster, TX), Calma Optimal (Franklin Park, IL), and Natural brands (Wood Dale, IL). The milk was manufactured on October 3rd with an October 22, 2011 sell by date. Milk from Farmers All Natural Creamery can be identified by the plant number 19888 printed on all gallon containers. These milk products should not be consumed. 2# bags, chopped romaine- Bag and box code B256-46438-8.
