The following health alert is from the FDA on March 18, 2011.

WorldVariety Produce, Inc., Los Angeles, CA is recalling Serrano Peppers, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected Serrano Peppers were isolated to 300 cases from Lot # 69073901, product of Mexico. This recall extends only to Walmart stores in Wisconsin, Montana, Utah and Wyoming; in addition to Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois. The affected Serrano peppers were sold from bulk displays between the dates of March 1, 2011 through March 18, 2011.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Serrano peppers listed above are asked to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact World Variety Produce, Inc. at 1-800-588-0151 Monday through Friday between 6:00 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time.

The following kashrus advisory is from the OK on February 11 2011 and reissued March 17, 2011.

Please be advised that that limited boxes of Post Fruity Pebbles and Post Cocoa Pebbles contain a promotional Fruity Pebble or Cocoa Pebble Treats Bar. These are Non-Kosher items. It is clearly indicated on the self contained bar that it is Not Kosher. This bar is double wrapped and does not come in contact with the Kosher certified Fruity Pebbles or Cocoa Pebbles.

The following health alert is from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets on March 15, 2011.

D&M Smoked Fish, Inc., Queens, NY, is recalling Haifa brand Schmaltz Herring with the Lot # 51 and Cold Smoked Sprats Lot #54 because the product was found to be uneviscerated. The lot for Schmaltz Herring being recalled packed in white plastic pails with salt brine and was distributed through following food retailers in the NY area on or after February 27.

  • Royal Seafood - 3100 Brighton Beach Ave, Brooklyn, NY
  • Ester Deli- 3664 Nostrand Ave. Brooklyn, NY
The lot for Cold Smoked Sprats being recalled is packed in bulk cases and was distributed through following food retailers in the NY area on or after February 28.
  • Gold Label - 281-285 Brighton Beach Ave. Brooklyn, NY
  • Gourmet Boutique- 36-88 Nostrand Ave. Brooklyn, NY
  • Ester Deli- 3664 Nostrand Ave. Brooklyn, NY
The products were sampled by a New York State Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector during a routine inspection. Analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel confirmed the Schmaltz Herring and Cold Smoked sprats were not properly eviscerated prior to processing. The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because of Clostridium Botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning.
Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled and should return it to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-523-8899.

The following health alert is from the FDA on March 11, 2011.

O.N.E. Coconut Water, packaged in 11.2 oz Tetra Pak cartons with Lot code 12E1004, UPC # 894991001104 and Sell-by date of May 1, 2011 has been recalled due to the potential oxidation of the product that may permit the growth of mold.

The affected product was distributed to various retail outlets in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, and Tennessee. O.N.E. Coconut Water, 11.2 oz Tetra Pak cartons, Lot code 12E1004, UPC # 894991001104, Sell-by date: May 1, 2011
Dates and codes can be found stamped on the top of the packaging.


Consumers should return any of this product to the retail store where it was purchased for a full refund or credit. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 888-ONE-COCO (888-663-2626) between 9 am and 5 pm P.T. Monday through Friday for further information.

The following health alert is from the FDA on March 11, 2011.

The Oak Farms Dairy plant, Waco, TX is voluntarily recalling half gallon plastic bottles of whole chocolate milk, half pint paper cartons of whole chocolate milk, and half pint paper cartons of 1% chocolate milk due to the presence of Alkaline Phosphatase found in samples during routine testing. All packaging, regardless of size or type, is printed with a “BEST BY” or “SELL BY” date of March 22, 2011 (printed as MAR 22 on paper half pints, 03/22/11 on plastic half gallons) and a plant code of 48-3302.
Consumers who have this product should not consume it. They should discard it and may return the product package to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Consumers with questions can contact the Company at 1-800-681-2249.

Tofutti Rock N Roll Cones, listed on p.76 of The Really Jewish Food Guide 2011, have been re-branded Triano Rock N Roll Cones. They are no longer kosher certified and should not be used. Old stock of Tofutti Rock N Roll Cones bearing the Kof-K logo is still kosher certified Parev.
