Kashrus and Dairy allergy alert on Undeclared Milk in Lidia’s Marinara Sauce

Marinara Sauce had wrong label and is actually dairy

March 9, 2017 - from the FDA and March 10, 2017 from Kof-K:

Nonna Foods in Woodbury, New York, is voluntarily recalling 25 ounce jars labeled as Lidia’s Marinara Sauce bearing a Best By Date 06/13/2019, because the product may contain undeclared milk.
The affected jars labeled as Lidia’s Marinara Sauce were distributed to distributors and retail stores located in the following states: New York; New Jersey; Connecticut; Rhode Island; New Hampshire; Massachusetts, Maine; Vermont, Pennsylvania; Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington DC, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Montana.
The product is packaged in NET WT 25 ounce glass jars with metal lids, and contains the following codes:

  • Best By Date 06/13/2019 (found on the neck of the jar)
  • UPC code 897712001018 (found on back below Nutrition Facts panel)

No other lots, codes or products are affected by this recall.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that a small percentage of Lidia’s Vodka Sauce jars, which contain milk, was incorrectly labeled with the Lidia’s Marinara Sauce label. Lidia’s Marinara Sauce does not contain milk. Subsequent investigation showed that the issue was caused by the application of incorrect labels during the packaging process and was an isolated incident, limited to approximately 750 jars. The matter has been corrected and the firm has instituted corrective measures.
Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged not to consume it and return to place of purchase for full refund, or to contact Cynthia Raneri at L & S Packing Co. for product exchange or full refund, by telephone at (800) 447-1718, Monday – Friday, 9:00AM to 5:00 PM EST.

Kashrus information regarding beer

March 7, 2017 - From the cRc liquor list:

All standard unflavored beers with no additives are acceptable, even without Kosher certification; see exceptions below. This applies to both American and imported beers, light, dark and non-alcoholic beers. However, since some breweries produce non-kosher beer which can affect even unflavored beer produced on the same equipment, it is recommended to only consume unflavored beer from a non-certified brewery after verifying that they do not produce any non-kosher beer such as oyster, bacon, clam, and lobster. Exceptions include: Beers from home and pub breweries, beer from Israel, milk stouts (and other beers which contain lactose), and flavored beer, including those flavored with spices, botanicals, or fruits, require hashgachah.

Kashrus information regarding Irish Whiskey

March 7, 2017 - From the cRc liquor list:

Many Irish Whiskies are aged in casks that previously held sherry, sauterne, port or other wines. Others have special “finishes” or multiple “maturations” that include wine. All of these practices raise kashrus concerns. The cRc policy is that Irish Whisky is permitted unless the label states that it is aged in a wine cask, has a special finish, or an extra maturation (as noted above). Consumers who wish to adopt this stance should read the label of each bottle before using it, and avoid wording such as double or triple finish, double or triple matured, dual casks or finish, European or French casks, Madeira finish, port, sauterne, or sherry. The cRc listings of recommended Irish Whiskies follows a stricter standard than the one listed above, and only includes Irish Whiskies that are certified and/or are known to not have any contact with wine or wine casks.
