The following health alert is from the FDA on October 18, 2010.

The Pictsweet Company, Bells, TN today announced a voluntary recall of certain codes of store brand products containing frozen Green Peas after the company learned that some of the packages may contain glass fragments, which may cause injury if ingested. Products subject to this recall were distributed only to Kroger stores in the Southeast United States and Walmart stores throughout the United States and include the following items:

  • Kroger 12 ounce Green Peas (UPC 11110 89736) Production Codes of 1440BU, 1440BV, 1440BW, and 1600BD
  • Kroger 12 ounce Peas and Carrots (UPC 11110 89741) Production Codes of 1960BD and 1960BE
  • Great Value 12 ounce Steamable Sweet Peas (UPC 78742 08369) Best by Dates of July 20, 2012; July 21, 2012
  • Great Value 12 ounce Steamable Mixed Vegetables (UPC 78742 08026) Best by Date of July 15, 2012
No injuries have been reported to date. While no injuries have been reported, Pictsweet is advising the public that product from these packages indicated above should not be consumed. Consumers who have purchased the above product should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact The Pictsweet Company at 1-800-367-7412, extension 417 toll-free from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time, Monday through Friday.

The following reissued British kashrus alert is from the London Beth Din on October 18, 2010.

You can still find mislabelled versions of Dorset Cereals Berries & Cherries Bars and Dorset Cereals Fruits, Nuts & Seeds Bars, which bear the 'KLBD' instead of 'KLBD D' logo. Despite the omission of the 'D', they are Dairy and include 'unsalted butter' in the ingredient declaration.

The following British kashrus alert is from the London Beth Din on June 9, 2010.

Recent batches of Dorset Cereals Berries & Cherries Bars and Fruits, Nuts & Seeds Bars, listed on p.34, have been mis-labelled 'KLBD' instead of 'KLBD D'. They are still Dairy and include 'unsalted butter' in the ingredient declaration.

The following kashrus alert is from the COR on October 15, 2010.

Please be advised that the following products made by David Roberts Food Corp were labeled with an unauthorized COR 564.

  • Two for the Road Ju Jubes, 80 g packet
  • Two for the Road Red Berries, 70 g packet
These products are not kosher even when bearing the COR 564.

The following kashrus advisory is from the OK on October 15, 2010.

UCHIDA AUTHENTIC RICE MALT (Mitoku Macrobiotic) may bear Hebrew stickers (in Israel) stating that the product is certified by OK. Although many Mitoku products are certified by OK Kosher Certification, the Uchida Rice Malt is not certified.
All certified MITOKU products have the OK kosher symbol printed on the label.

The following health alert is from the FDA on October 7, 2010 and revised by the editor after a conversation wit the consumer on October 15, 2010.

D & M Smoked Fish, Inc. (DBA Haifa Smoked Fish), Jamaica, NY is recalling specific lots of Haifa Smoked Fish brand products listed below because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled products were air-packed in bulk boxes and vacuum-packed in clear, plastic bags of various size packages including 4 oz., 8 oz., 16 oz. and random weight sides with the brand name "Haifa Smoked Fish" appearing on a label. Lot numbers appear on the bottom of the gold boards, labels, and/or on bulk boxes. The recalled units bear lot numbers 220; 221; 222; 223; 224; 225; 227; 228; 229; 230; 231; 232; 234; 235; 236; 237; 238; 239; 241; 242; 243 & 244 for the following products:


  • Cold Smoked Salmon
  • Cold Smoked Semga
  • Hot Smoked Semga
  • Cold Smoked Butterfish
  • Cold Smoked Butterfish - Salmon
  • Cold Smoked Sprats
  • Cold Smoked Capelin
  • Cold Smoked Sea Bass
  • Cold Smoked Sea Bass & Salmon
  • Hot Smoked Sea Bass
  • Cold Smoked Whitefish
  • Hot Smoked Whitefish
  • Cold Smoked Mackerel
  • Hot Smoked Mackerel Fillets
  • Hot Smoked Mackerel
  • Cold Smoked Turbot
  • Cold Smoked Herring
  • Shmaltz Herring
  • erring in oil - glass jars
  • Hot Smoked Sable
  • Cold Smoked Rainbow Trout
  • Hot Smoked Gold Brook Trout

  • Dry Capelin
  • Hot Smoked Lake Trout
  • Hot Smoked Paddle Fish
No other lot numbers are involved in this recall action.
The recalled products were sold between August 10, 2010 and September 3, 2010 to retailers and distributors in greater NY, NJ, and areas of IL. Consumers may have purchased the product(s) from retail food stores.
The recall was a result of FDA sampling and analysis, which led to enforcement of a previous court order requiring production and distribution of the products to cease.
Consumers who have purchased any of the above lot codes of Haifa Smoked Fish brand products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-718-523-8899, Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 5 pm, and on Fridays until 2 pm ET.

Ed. note: This recalled product has a much wider distribution than the states listed on the alert by the FDA particularly in kosher stores.

The following South African kashrus notice is from the Beth Din of Johannesburg on October 13, 2010.

Alternative Method for Checking Rice and Other Grains

  1. Visually scan the product and look for obvious signs of infestations (weevils, worms, and/or webbing). If you find signs of infestation, then discard (or return) the product. If no infestation is found, then continue with the next step.
  2. Place the rice/grains in a household sieve and then agitate the sieve while holding it over a light box or sheet of white paper.
  3. Carefully scrutinize the light box or sheet of paper.
  4. If you find any infestation whatsoever, then discard (or return) the product. If there is no infestation, then the product may be used.

Some Honeyfields Chocolates and Cones products (e.g., Granadilla Sauce, Go-Go Bars, etc.) bear an unauthorized Beth Din logo. These products are not under the supervision of the Beth Din. Appropriate action is being taken against the manufacturer.
