The following kashrus alert is from the Kosher Technical Konsultants on Nov 14,2016

Carrefour Houmous is manufactured in Barcelona, Spain and their facility is not Kosher approved. Name of Manufacturer: Rensika SL, Barcelona, Spain Product being sold in France at Carrefour and is not kosher approved.

It bears NO kosher symbol.

Note: Just because a product is vegetarian do not assume it might be kosher

Free2b Foods Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Milk Ingredient in Chocolate Sun Cups

November 10, 2016 - From the FDA:

Free2b Foods of Boulder, CO is recalling its chocolate Sun Cups for three specific Sell By dates, because it may contain undeclared milk ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The recalled chocolate Sun Cups were distributed nationwide in retail stores. Specifics on the recalled products are found below. UPC codes are printed on the back of packages and Sell By dates are stamped in black on the back of packages.

The issue was discovered as a result of a consumer communication. One reaction has been reported to the company to date. Subsequent investigation by the company indicates that this milk-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk.  This occurred during a transition the company recently made to remove dairy from its products and facility while moving from a top 7 Allergen-Free facility to a Top 8 Allergen-Free facility.  They are now a dedicated Top 8 Allergen-Free manufacturing facility.

If you have these Sun Cups and a milk allergy, do not consume them. Please photograph the package with UPC code, then dispose of them or return them to: Free2b Foods, 5305 Spine Road #E Boulder, CO 80301. Free2b Foods will reimburse or replace products with new chocolate Sun Cups.

Food Recall Warning (Allergen) - Dr. Praeger's brand Organic Kale & Quinoa Veggie Burgers recalled due to undeclared egg

November 10, 2016 - From the CFIA with additional information on November 11. 2016 - CFIA:

Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. is recalling Dr. Praeger's Organic Kale & Quinoa Veggie Burgers from the marketplace because they contain egg which is not declared on the label. People with an allergy to egg should not consume the recalled product described below.

Agave Dream Recalls Several Flavors Of Ice Creams In Pint Size Containers Because Of Possible Health Risk

November 10, 2016 - From the FDA:

Agave Dream is recalling all vanilla, chocolate, cappuccino, chocolate chip and lavender ice creams packaged in pint sized containers, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Product was distributed across the United States through retail stores receiving product from KeHE Romeoville & Dallas warehouses, DPI NW, Americold, IWI Franklin Indiana warehouse, Jakes Finer Foods Houston Texas, Haddon House Richburg South Carolina & Medford New Jersey, Grocery Outlet California, UNFI- Auburn Washington, Dallas Texas & Ridgefield Washington.
All of the recalled products were manufactured and packaged in a facility owned by a contract manufacturer, Dr. Bob’s of Upland, LLC. Recalled products are Agave Dream ice creams packed in pints with “best buy” date located at the bottom of the pint. The following flavors and "Best By" dates are being recalled:

The recall is the result of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration finding samples positive for Listeria monocytogenes in the contract manufacturer’s facility and in finished product of another company’s brand, leading the contract manufacturer to recall all ice cream products it produced for Agave Dream.

Consumers who have purchased the identified Agave Dream ice cream products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 866-993-4438 or agavedream@sbcglobal.net. Monday-Friday, 9am PST-5pm PST.

Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company Recalls Select Products Containing Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pieces Purchased From Outside Supplier Aspen Hills Due To Possible Health Risk

October 11, 2016 - From the FDA and additional recall on November 10, 2016 at FDA

Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company, Inc. is recalling select ice cream products, because they were made with a chocolate chip cookie dough ingredient supplied by Aspen Hills, Inc., which has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The ice cream products were distributed to the following states AL, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, OK, PA, SC, TX, WA, WI & WV. The ice cream products were distributed to various ice cream shops around the country, online outlets and limited grocery stores.
4,183 3 Gallon Cartons and 5,296 Pints are affected by this recall.
This recall includes the following products with code dates provided:

  • Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Co. 3 Gallon Cartons
  • Cookie Dough Ice Cream 12/29/17, 12/19/17, 12/13/17, 12/6/17, 11/26/17 & 11/15/17 and code date 10/15/17, 10/21/17, 11/1/17 & 11/8/17
  • Heaps of Love Ice Cream 12/29/17, 11/24/17 & 11/8/17 and code date 10/20/17, 10/28/17 & 11/8/17

South African kashrus notice on Kikkoman Sauces

Kikkoman Sauces
Certain Kikkoman products have non-kosher ingredients and so Kikkoman products must always be certified. The following is the most recent information to hand:

  • Kikkoman Products made in Singapore 
    Only the following Kikkoman products made and in Singapore are certified kosher and Parev by Kosher Australia with or without their logo on the bottle:
    • Kikkoman Soy Sauce
    • Kikkoman Premium Soy Sauce
    • Kikkoman Gluten Free Soy Sauce
    Kikkoman Soy Sauce Sachets which are packed outside of Singapore are not kosher.
    No other Kikkoman products from Singapore e.g. Less Salt Soy Sauce; Low Salt Soy sauce; Less Sodium Soy Sauce; Low sodium Soy Sauce; Sushi and Sashimi Soy Sauce; Teriyaki Sauce are kosher certified.
  • Kikkoman Products made in the USA
    There are number of Kosher certified Kikkoman products from the USA. All of these must bear the hechsher of a reliable kosher authority.
  • Kikkoman Products made in Holland
    The following products only are approved by the Netherlands Rabbinate:
    • Kikkoman Soy Sauce in 150ml and 250 ml size
    • Kikkoman Gluten Free Soy Sauce in 250ml size
    • Kikkoman Less Salt Soy Sauce in 150 ml size

South African kashrus notice on Monin Syrups

Monin Syrups are produced in 3 countries. Please pay attention to the country of origin on the label and follow these guidelines:

  • When produced in France the flavours listed on the website are kosher.
  • When produced in America they are kosher when bearing the KSA Logo.
  • Monin Syrups produced in Malaysia may not be used as they refuse to give kashrut information to any kashrut authority.

Voluntary Recall of Potentially Contaminated Cucumbers

November 8, 2016: The FoodSafetyNews:

“Prime Time Produce has issued a voluntary product recall for certain lots of cucumbers, delivered to multiple locations in Bakersfield, due to potential salmonella contamination."
"Thousands of public school students, as well as hospital patients, may have been served fresh cucumbers that are under recall because of potential Salmonella contamination."

Ed. note: This is the first notice of a recall that is likely to grow. BJ's is one of the places that received these infected cucumbers.

McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams Recalls Select 16oz. Packages Due To Possible Health Risk

November 4, 2016 - From the FDA:

Out of an abundance of caution, McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams is undertaking a voluntary recall of selected, 16 oz. (pint size) packages of ice cream produced by a contract manufacturer because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The seven affected flavors, available only in pints, accounts for approximately 15% of the pint-packaged ice cream products carrying the McConnell’s brand label. All of the recalled products were manufactured and packaged in a facility owned by a contract manufacturer, Dr. Bob’s of Upland, LLC. No other products were affected. Ice cream produced at McConnell’s Santa Barbara facility are not included in the recall. No illnesses have been reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found samples positive for Listeria monocytogenes in the contract manufacturer’s facility and in finished product of another company’s brand, leading the contract manufacturer to recall all ice cream products it produced for McConnell’s and other ice cream companies this year.

Because this recall affects only McConnell’s products manufactured by the contract manufacturer facility, it is important that consumers carefully check the following flavor/code date combinations to be certain the correct products are removed.

The following flavors and “Best By” code dates are being recalled:

The product comes in a 16-ounce (pint size) paper package marked with “Best By” lot numbers listed above and printed in black on the bottom of the carton.

Consumers who have purchased any of the seven 16-ounce (pint size) packages of McConnell’s ice cream should not eat these products and are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
