The following Israeli kashrus alert is from the Jerusalem Kosher News based on Rabbi Shmuel Semelman on June 15, 2010.

Southern Comfort: According to noted authority on alcoholic beverages Rabbi Shmuel Semelman, who is affiliated with the Jerusalem Religious Council Kashrut Division, there are three categories of Southern Comfort.

  • Produced in Ireland, with a hechsher from Badatz Basel and Badatz Beit Yosef. This is ONLY the case if the kashrut symbols are visible on the bottles, which are parve. A special run has been imported with approval via the Jerusalem Rabbinate due to the efforts of Rabbi Semelman, BUT ONLY those exhibiting the hechsherim listed above and they too are parve.
  • There is another produced in Ireland, which is "authorized" by the London Beit Din, but it is NOT under the organization’s supervision. This is categorized as dairy chalav akum. (Produced in the USA and bottled in Ireland. This is sold in Israel and in duty free. The alcohol is distilled from whey – DAIRY)
  • The third is manufactured in the United States, and it is not authorized, and it may contain non permitted wine. (Produced and bottled in the USA)

The following health alert is from the www.envirolaw.org/documents/FINALNewsRelease.pdf on June 15, 2010.

The Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) filed Notices of Violation of California Proposition 65 Toxics Right to Know law, alleging the toxic chemical lead was found in a variety of children's and baby foods. The specific food categories included apple juice, grape juice , packaged pears and peaches (including baby food), and fruit cocktail.
Ed. note: There are many kosher certified products on this list of products which contain lead.

Winn-Dixie Candy Corn, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. Jacksonville, FL: This product mistakenly bears an unauthorized OU symbol and is not kosher. The product is being withdrawn from the marketplace.

The following sulfite allergy alert is from the FDA on June 15, 2010.

Sirob Imports, Inc., Lindenhurst, NY, is recalling 16 oz vacuum packed bags of Strawberry Farm Sun Dried Tomatoes because they contain undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The product comes in 16 oz, clear plastic vacuum packed bags. The recalled Strawberry Farm Sun Dried Tomatoes were distributed in Queens, NY to a retail store. The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in the 16 oz vacuum packed bags Strawberry Farm Sun Dried Tomatoes which were not declared on the label. Consumers who have purchased 16 oz vacuum packed bags Strawberry Farm Sun Dried Tomatoes are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 631-957-8888.

The company apologizes for the error and they are taking corrective measures.

GO-GO-BAR Crispy Wafer In Creamy Milk Chocolate bears an unauthorized Beth Din Hechsher and is not kosher certified.

The following allergy and kashrus alert is from the FDA on June 12, 2010.

Bimbo Bakeries USA, Inc. is recalling Bimbo brand Soft White Bread (1 lb. 4 oz. or 567 grams) sold in CA, ID, OR and WA because it may contain undeclared milk. The product being recalled has a red band of color above the clear bag window on the front of bread bag and square lock tab closures in the colors and dates as follows:

  • white tab - 6/14 or 6/21
  • blue tab - 6/15
  • tan tab - 6/17
  • green tab - 6/18
  • red tab - 6/20
The company announced the recall after it was discovered that the product containing milk was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk. All products with the above code dates are being removed from store shelves. No other Bimbo brand products are affected.
Consumers with allergies to milk who have purchased the product can return the product to its place of purchase for a full refund.Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-984-0989 at any time 24 hours a
