The following health alert is from the Barfblog.com and FDA Williamette alert and Willamette on December 17, 2009.

The following shelled halselnut recalls are due to salmonella contamination:

  • Kunze Farms, Dayton, OR is recalling 32,950 lbs. of hazelnut kernels distributed to several different processors and wholesaler’s in the following areas:
    Dayton, OR; , Milton-Freewater, OR; Hauppauge, NY; Mesa, AZ; Cottonwood, AZ; Seattle, WA; Ogden, UT; San Antonio, TX.; and Parker, CO. The product was packed in 25 lb cartons, under our product brand name of Kunze Farms, ‘Select Shelled Hazelnuts’ Dayton, Oregon with the code numbers 289091A or 299091A.
  • Willamette Filbert Growers, Newberg, OR is recalling 29,861 lbs of Shelled Hazelnuts and Shelled Organic Hazelnuts, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. To ensure consumer safety, Willamette Filbert Growers has decided to recall all shelled hazelnuts and shelled organic hazelnuts processed from October 12th 2009 through November 25th 2009.
    Shelled Hazelnuts and Shelled Organic Hazelnuts were distributed in Oregon and California through wholesale distributors and direct delivery. Unshelled hazelnuts are not subject to this recall.
    All products subject to recall were packed in 25 lbs. corrugated boxes bearing Willamette Filbert Growers or Meridian Organic Hazelnuts labeled with lot code numbers 289091A and 311091A.
  • Willamette Shelling, Newberg, OR is recalling 114,350 lbs of Shelled Hazelnuts, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. To ensure consumer safety, Willamette Shelling has decided to recall all shelled hazelnuts processed at its facility from October 12th 2009 through November 25th 2009.
    All products subject to recall were packed in 25 lbs. and 50 lbs. corrugated boxes with lot code numbers 296091A, 299091A, 300091A, VH3696BO, and 310091A. Those corrugated boxes bore the following brand names: Kunze Farms, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Canadian Hazelnuts, and Firestone Farms.

The following health alert is from the FDA on December 19, 2009.
Whole Foods Market is recalling organic raw hazelnuts (filberts) sold in bulk through its stores in CA, CO, KS, NM, OR, UT and WA because the nuts were part of a batch that was contaminated with salmonella. The company is also recalling non-organic dry roasted hazelnuts (filberts) sold in bulk through its stores in CA, NV, OR, and WA, and non-organic raw hazelnuts (filberts) sold in bulk through its stores in OR and WA. These hazelnuts should not be consumed.

The following health alert is from the FDA on December 19, 2009.
Burnt Ridge Orchards, Inc., Onalaska WA is recalling 98 pounds of shelled hazelnuts because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The shelled hazelnuts that are subject to recall were sold Nov. 17th to Dec. 13th at the Olympia Farmer’s Market in Olympia, WA. They were packed in 8 oz and 16 oz zip lock plastic bags. This recall does not apply to hazelnuts sold in the shell.

My-T Fine Pudding Chocolate Pudding, Jel Sert Co.- West Chicago, IL: This certified product is pareve even when listing "contains dairy" in the ingredient panel, as the product had been reformulated though the ingredient statement was not corrected.

The following teruma and maaser and alert is from the Vaad of Denver, Chief Rabbinate of Bnei Brak and the Beth Din of Johannesburg posted on December 20, 2009.

The produce from Israel needs to be tithed (Terumah, Ma'aser) properly before consuming. Please be aware that Sam's Club is selling packages of the multi colored peppers that says product of Mexico and Israel. These peppers need to be tithed without a brocho since it is sofek from where they originate. Other similar packages say product of Mexico and Nicaragua so one should be diligent in their selection.
The Beth Din of Johannesburg is stating that Grapefruit and other produce from Israel are currently available in South Africa and these need to be tithed.

The following kashrus update is from the Kof-K Halachically Speaking on December 15, 2009.

Listerine® is reinstating Kof-K hashgacha on the Listerine® Pocketpaks® due to the numerous phone calls that Johnson and Johnson (manufacturers of Listerine Pocketpacks) received from consumers. The product will bear a Kof-K symbol in the very near future. In the interim, all LIsterine Pocketpaks being sold now are crtified kosher by the Kof-K even without the Kof-K symbol on them.
