Oh Nuts

February 24, 2016 - From the Chicago Rabbinical Council:

Certain Packages of products under the "Oh Nuts" brand bear an unauthorized cRc logo. In addition, the labels on some of those packages do not indicate that the product is dairy, cholov stam.
The cRc does not presently certify any products under the "Oh Nuts" brand.
Corrective actions are being taken.

Ed. note: From the OK: It is a labeling error. The mislabeled Lavender Chocolate Lentils Gems are OK-D, cholov stam.

Jack & The Green sprouts linked to E. coli outbreak

February 26, 2016 - From FoodSafetyNews: Jack & The Green Sprouts is recalling their company's sprouts.

February 24, 2016 - From Fiidsafetynews.com and Minnesota Department of Health: People should avoid eating alfalfa sprouts produced by Jack & The Green Sprouts. These have been linked to an E coli outbreak that has gotten at least 9 people sick. "Jack & The Green Sprouts alfalfa sprouts may be packaged in a plastic clamshell with a brightly colored round label on top that notes the sprout variety. The alfalfa sprouts may be mixed in the same package with other sprout varieties." "Jack & The Green Sprouts, River Falls, WI, distributes its sprouts to states in the upper Midwest 'and possibly other states.'"

Marathon Ventures, Incorporated Announces Voluntary Recall of Raw Macadamia Nuts Due to Possible Health Risk

February 23, 2016 - From the FDA:

Marathon Ventures, Inc. announced today that it is voluntarily recalling various retail and bulk packages containing raw macadamia nuts as a precautionary measure because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled products were sold between July 2, 2015 and February 3, 2016, through grocery, foodservice, other retail outlets, and direct mail orders via company website nationwide. Affected products are packaged as follows:

Health alert on Sweetwater Farms Sprouts

February 23, 2016 - From the CDC:

"Thirteen people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Muenchen have been reported from four states."
"Collaborative investigative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory officials indicate that alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms of Inman, Kansas are a likely source of this outbreak."
"We recommend that consumers do not eat and restaurants and other retailers do not sell or serve alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms at this time."

Kosher info on Kroger Breads in the Atlanta area

February 23, 2016 - From the Atlanta Kashruth Commission:

  • AKC certified Kroger Raisin Bread is pareve. Some ingredient labels may incorrectly list dairy ingredients.
  • The AKC does not recommend Kroger Bagels with a plain K.

British Kashrus alert on Eager Cranberry Juice Drink

February 23, 2016: From the London Beth Din: It has come to our attention that Eager Cranberry Juice Drink (not listed in The Really Jewish Food Guide 2016) contains natural fruit sugars derived from grape and is therefore Not Kosher.
Products containing fruit sugar can be problematic and therefore should be avoided unless bearing a hechsher.
