The following health alert is from the FDA on July 9, 2009.

Kowalke Family Sprouts of Los Angeles CA is recalling all Kowalke Family Sprouts Brand Alfalfa Products with sell-by dates from June 18 through June 30 because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious illness. Mike's Produce, Inc. dba Kowalke Family Sprouts is voluntarily recalling the alfalfa products after receiving notification that a surveillance sample taken at a retail location with a June 21 sell-by date tested positive for Salmonella.

The following health alert is from the FDA on July 2, 2009.

McClancy Seasoning Co. announced that it is recalling Alba Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk (25.6 oz), Alba Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk (9.6 oz), Alba Creamy Milk Chocolate Snack Shake Mix (6 oz), Alba Double Fudge Royale Snack Shake Mix (6 oz), Alba Smooth Vanilla Bean Snack Shake Mix (6 oz) and Alba Strawberry Banana Snack Shake Mix (6 oz). These products contain instant non-fat dry milk supplied by Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which is voluntarily recalling this ingredient because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The Kroger Co. said today it is recalling Kroger Popcorn Seasoning Movie Theater Butter Flavored, Kroger Popcorn Seasoning White Cheddar Flavored, and Kroger Fat Free Butter Flavored Sprinkles sold in some of its retail stores because the Company has been made aware by a supplier that an ingredient in the product may have been contaminated with Salmonella.
Stores the company operates under the following names did not receive any of the seasonings being recalled: Ralphs, Smith’s, Fred Meyer, QFC, Fry’s, King Soopers, City Market, and Foods Co. Kroger is recalling the following items:
  • Kroger Popcorn Seasoning Movie Theater Butter Flavored sold in 2.82-ounce jars with a sell-by date of JUN 08 10 under the following UPC code: 011110 72445.
  • Kroger Popcorn Seasoning White Cheddar Flavored sold in 2.82-ounce jars with a sell-by date of JUN 09 10 under the following UPC code: 011110 72444. These two seasonings were sold in Kroger stores in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia; Dillons and Gerbes stores in Kansas and Missouri; Baker’s stores in Nebraska; and Food 4 Less, Hilander, Jay C, Owen’s, Pay Less and Scott’s stores in Illinois and Indiana.
  • Kroger Fat Free Butter Flavored Sprinkles sold in 2-ounce jars with sell-by dates of JUN 08 10 and JUN 09 10 under the following UPC code: 011110 66853. This seasoning was sold in Kroger stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
Customers who have purchased the above products should not consume them and should return them to a store for a full refund or replacement. Consumers who have questions about this recall may contact Kroger toll-free at (800) 632-6900. For more information, please visit www.kroger.com/recalls.

The following health alert is from the FDA on July 1, 2009.

Following notification from its manufacturer, Giant Food has recalled the following Giant brand Non Fat Dry Milk products:
Giant Nonfat Dried Milk, 9.6 ounce size, UPC – 6-8826707833, Code – FEB 0511S
The items were removed from store shelves because they were produced with nonfat dried milk that is part of a national recall by Plainview Milk and may have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to any Giant Food for a full refund. To date, Giant Food has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product. Customers looking for additional information may call Giant’s corporate brands toll free line at 1-877-846-9949, M-F, 9 am-1 pm. Or Giant’s Customer Service line at 1-888-469-4426, M-F, 9 am–5 p.m.

The following health alert is from the Malt-o-Meal on July 3, 2009.

Malt-O-Meal Company is voluntarily recalling "Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal" and "Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal" packets sold in “Variety” cartons, with carton date codes between June 30, 2009 and October 28, 2010 because it contains instant non-fat dry milk manufactured by the Plainview Milk Products Cooperative. Plainview has recently commenced a recall of instant non-fat dry milk and other ingredients that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The product affected by this recall includes single-serve packets of “Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal” and “Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal” packets sold in “Variety” cartons distributed nationally under a variety of brands in cartons of 6 to 15 packets. Brands include Cub Foods, Diamond Crystal, Fastco, Flavorite, Foodland, Good ‘n Hearty, Hearty Traditions, Hy-Top, IGA, Mom’s Best Natural, Megaroons, Millville, Our Family, Richfood, Shop ‘n Save and Smart Menu. Consumers should look on the product cartons for carton date codes that are between June 30, 2009 (which would be printed as “JUN3009”) and October 28, 2010 (which would be printed as “OCT2810”). These dates are usually printed as the first seven characters of a 15-character string. Consumers also can refer to the comprehensive list of affected products at www.momsbestnaturals.com/oatmeal-news/packages.php. Consumers who have purchased affected products should not consume them and are urged to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-877-665-9331 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central time
