Wawona Frozen Foods Voluntarily Recalls Organic Daybreak Blend Processed and Sold in 2022 Due to Possible Health Risk

June 9, 2023 from the FDA:

Wawona Frozen Foods is voluntarily recalling year-old packages of its Organic DayBreak Blend distributed to Costco Wholesale stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Washington from April 15, 2022 to June 26, 2022 because the DayBreak Blend includes organic frozen strawberries grown in Mexico which may have the potential to be contaminated with Hepatitis A.

Wawona Frozen Foods is issuing this voluntary recall for the year-old Organic DayBreak Blend out of an abundance of caution. There have been no illnesses associated with this voluntary and precautionary recall.

The year-old recalled Organic DayBreak Blend product is no longer available for purchase at Costco. Organic DayBreak Blend products on store shelves currently or that have different lot codes or purchase dates are not subject to this recall.

The recall is being issued for the potential presence of Salmonella Infantis, which was discovered during sampling of the five-pound bag product.

This recall affects two date codes of Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour in the five- and ten pound bags and two date codes of Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour in the two- and five-pound bags. All other types of Gold Medal Flour are not affected by this recall.

Consumers are asked to check their pantries and dispose of the product affected by this recall. Consumers who have had to discard products covered by this recall may contact General Mills Consumer Relations at 1-800-230-8103.

Kashrut Information: Pearl Milling Company Syrup

June 6, 2023 from the OU in response to the editor's question:

The original flavor syrup is indeed DE.

Kashrut Information - Aunt Jemima's Lite Syrup

September 13, 2021 from the OU in response to the editor's question:

Aunt Jemima's Lite Syrup bearing an OUD is DE.

Kashrut Information - Pearl Milling company syrup- used to be Aunt Jemima's

September 1, 2021 from the OU in response to the editor's question:

The Pearl Milling original syrup is labeled OUD, but in fact, its true status, at the present time, is DE (Dairy Equipment).

What does DE mean? Parve products made with heat on dairy equipment may be eaten after meat, but not with meat.
Some kashrus agencies use a DE symbol, but the OU has chosen not to use a DE designation because it is felt it may be confusing to the kosher consumer. Also, to be a true DE product, the equipment must be properly cleaned of residue after dairy production, and that level of cleanliness is sometimes difficult to maintain and guarantee.

Please note that it is possible that the manufacturer will reformulate this product and add a true dairy ingredient. You will not be able to know this, since the OUD kosher symbol will remain the same. We recommend that you call our office every 3 months to reconfirm the DE status of this product.
