The following information on vegetables is from the Vaad Hoir of St. Louis on June 24, 2015.

OV Revised & Updated Fresh/Frozen Fruit & Vegetable Checking Policy

Previously, the OV’s policy was that pre-washed iceberg lettuce even when not bearing a kosher symbol, did not need checking before consumption.

  1. Effective immediately and until further notice, the revised OV policy is that pre-washed iceberg lettuce when bearing a reliable kosher symbol does not require checking before eating.
  2. However, pre-washed iceberg lettuce that does not bear a reliable kosher symbol must be checked by taking 1-2 handfuls and checking for infestation. If they are clean, then the remainder of the lettuce may be eaten without checking.
  3. Shredded cabbage and coleslaw mix do not need checking even when not bearing a kosher symbol as long as they are pre-washed.
  4. Frozen chopped spinach must bear a reliable kosher symbol.
  5. Fresh blackberries/raspberries are not recommended at this time.
  6. Frozen blackberries/raspberries with no kosher sensitive additives may be used without checking.
  7. All canned blackberries/raspberries require a reliable kosher symbol.

Dorot Farms Carrots from Israel have been seen at Price Rite (in Stoughton, MA). Consumers should check the origin of all produce that they purchase.
From a reader: These products are certifiedby the Shderot rabbinate and are sold under a heter mechira.
There are different opionions as to whether you can rely on heter mehira. Please check with your rabbi.

The following shmitta information is from the Star-K Keeping You Kurrent for May, 2015.

Carrots & Peppers from Israel- Please be aware that carrots (e.g., Dorot Farms brand), peppers, and other vegetables from Israel are consistently being sold in the Baltimore area at produce markets in our neighborhoods. The labels on the packages state "Product of Israel:. From the numerous inquiries we have received, it is apparent that many consumers are unaware of this when shopping.
These vegetables were grown during the shmittah year and may not be eaten . Furthermore, they may not be thrown out and require special handling. If you bought these products, please contact your local Orthodox rabbi for further guidance. Seven Mile Market in Baltimore is monitored by STAR-K, and produce sold there does not have this issue.

All citrus fruits from Israel are still from the 6th year, which means that terumos and ma’asros need to be taken. Some fruits (e.g., peaches, nectarines, cherries, lichi, grapes, figs, apples and apricots) from Israel are from the shmitta crop, which means that they need to be eaten with special care (see our articles).

The following shmitta alert is from the cRc on for May 29, 2015.
