The following health alert is from the FDA on January 28, 2008.

Shiloh Farms, of New Holland, Pennsylvania, is recalling Shiloh Farms Organic Unhulled Sesame Seeds, 12-oz., because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. This product comes in a 12 oz blue and white 5” x 8” plastic bag with a Shiloh Farms logo and USDA organic symbol. The UPC bar code number is 047593303545. The firm’s name and address appears on the back of the plastic bag. Product distributed between November 1, 2007 and January 25, 2008 is being recalled. Only product with lot codes 17503 and 17133 are affected. The contamination was identified when FDA testing revealed the presence of salmonella in a sample of organic sesame seeds from a Shiloh Farms supplier. The recalled Shiloh Farms product was distributed to a total of 98 health food stores located in NY, CT, NJ, MA, VA, PA, MD and AK. The company is asking stores to discontinue distribution of this product and to promptly return the product and stock on hand to the company for credit. Consumers should not consume this product and return this product to the point of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions may contact Shiloh Farms, (800) 362-6832.

The following South African kashrus alert is from the Cape Town Beth Din on January 28, 2008.

The Woolworths chicken stock granules has been reformulated and is no longer kosher. The reformulated product has the Beth Din Logo covered with a sticker. The old stock (and there is still quite a lot around) bearing the Beth Din logo is kosher. Product having dehydrated chicken as an ingredient is of course NOT kosher. Should any of the latter (non kosher product) be found bearing a visible BD logo, please contact the Cape Beth Din (ph 021 461 6310, fax 021 461 8320, email kashrut@uoscape.co.za) giving the branch of Woolworths store where it was found / purchased.

The following South African kashrus alert is from the Beth Din of Johannesburg on January 24, 2008.

Samoosas manufactured by “Food Delight” bearing the Beth Din Logo are being sold in various outlets, particular Spar. These products are NOT kosher - the logo has been forged. Appropriate action is being taken against the company.

The following nut allergy alert is from the FAAN January 22, 2008.

Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream is recalling 1.75-qt. packages of “Dreyer’s Slow Churned Light Caramel Delight” ice cream and “Dreyer’s Slow Churned Light Butter Pecan” ice cream due to undeclared pecans. The ice cream was distributed in CO, ID, OR, and WY. The 1.75-qt. packages are coded on the bottom with “Best If Purchased By 09/11/08 049-32.” Consumers who have purchased the ice cream may call (888) 837-4438 for a full refund.

The following kashrus alert is from the OU January 22, 2008.

Alan Wong’s Macadamia Nut Brittle (UPC #7-07178-10005-0), Hamakua Macademia Nut Company, Kawaihae, HI: This product is certified OU-D and its ingredient panel lists dairy ingredients. The product label was inadvertently applied in such a fashion as to cover the “D” designation. Corrective action is being taken.
