The following public notice is from Hakhel Community Awareness Bulletin and the Kosher Information Center, relating to Kaporos on September 5, 2007.

It is the recommendation of the KIC with the approval and urging of Gedolai Torah, that the following guidelines for live chicken kaporos be instituted:
Every Kaporo center be under a reliable Hashgacha, be it a Kehila or a recognized individual Rav. This entails the following responsibilities:

  • Treatment of the chickens to minimize tzar baalay chaim.
  • Proper handling of chickens to prevent problems that may cause treifos.
  • The Schechita
  • The Bedika
  • Kashering
  • Final distribution to aniyim/tzedakah institutions.
  • Adequate control that live chickens are not being reused for other Kaporos.
  • Enforcement of the proper separation of men and women, during the procedures is encouraged.

The following kashrus alert is from the Star-K on August 20, 2007 and revised on September 4, 2007.

Effective 8/13/2007, Beverly Hills Suites glatt kosher kitchen at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Windsor Locks, CT, is no longer Star-K certified.
Ed. note: They are certified as kosher by the Vaad of Springfield.

The following health alert is from the FDA dated August 25, 2007.

American Pie, LLC, Woodbury, NY, is voluntarily recalling 1440 cases of its Marie Callender Turtle Pies with date codes 07 (from military time 11:45 up to and including 16:00) 143 because the product was inadvertently shipped prior to the company obtaining satisfactory microbial test results. The product was shipped to the following locations:


    Kroger Supermarkets: Columbus, OH; Houston, TX; Roanoke, VA; Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; Memphis, TN; Shelbyville, TN; Louisville, KY;
    Giant Eagle Supermarkets: Akron, Canton, Lake, Cleveland, Columbus, Erie, Toledo, Johnston (all in Ohio); also New Castle, MD; Pittsburgh, PA; and Youngstown, WV;
    Hy-Vee Supermarkets: Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Maryland, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
    There was no direct foreign distribution.
    The pies are packaged in 28oz. boxes with UPC code 12781 10280. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product had been distributed without company authorization. Consumers who have purchased Marie Callender Turtle Pies with the above date codes are urged to return them to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-888-339-7437, x3987.

The following kashrus alert is from the Kosher Information aBureau and confirmed by Rabbi Frenkel posted on September 3, 2007.

A forged certificate in the name of the CK - Rabbi Eli Frankel had been found for Barbeque Sauce, Enchilada Sauce, Orange Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, Indian Curry, Thai Style Sauce, Pesto Sauce, processed and packed by Kitchen Powerhouse, Inc. at their plant in Irvine, California. This product is not certified as kosher by Rabbi Eli Frankel and the certificate is forged.

FRESH 'N HEALTHY foods and salads, previously known as GOURMET VEG PAQ, of Hollister, CA is no longer certified as Kosher by the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of San Francisco. Any boxes or packs bearing our logo produced after August 1st, 2007 are invalid and uncertified.

Please be advised that OK Kosher Certification does not certify Aqualite Water Enhancer manufactured for Biogenyx, Inc, Crete, IL 60417. These products bear an unauthorized OK symbol.

The following health alert is from the FDA on August 28, 2007.

Metz Fresh, LLC, Salinas, CA is voluntarily recalling bagged spinach as a result of a positive test for Salmonella found during routine company testing. The spinach is distributed under the label Metz Fresh, in both retail and food service packages. These include 10 and 16 oz bags as well as 4-2.5 lb. and 4 lb. cartons. The only Metz Fresh product affected is spinach that bears the tracking codes 12208114, 12208214 and 12208314. It was distributed in the continental United States and Canada. Consumers are advised to discard this product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact 831-386-1018.

The following kashrus alert is from the Star-K on August 28, 2007.
Effective immediately, Krispy Kreme, located at Penn Station, NYC, is no longer Star-D certified. The Star-D does not currently certify any Krispy Kreme stores or products in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT).

The following kashrus alert is from the Kosher-NY on August 26, 2007.
The Krispy Kreme located at Penn Station (2 Penn Plaza, at Penn Station's Amtrak Rotunda), is no longer under kosher supervision. According to Krispy Kreme (1-800-4KRISPY), this is the only remaining Krispy Kreme location in the city of New York.
