Kashrus alert on Kahlua liqueur produced in Mexico

August 23, 2016: From the Beth Din of Johannesburg:

Due to a change in formulation Kahlua is no longer kosher wherever it is produced or bottled.
Old stocks of Kahlua which were produced and bottled in Mexico and which were purchased before 1st April 2016 may be used.
Additionally, each bottle of Kahlua bears a Lot Code which is usually printed on the bottom on the label on the back of the bottle. This Lot Code consists of the letter L followed by 4 digits and some more letters and numbers. If the 4 digit number following the L is less than 6060 and the Kahlua was produced and bottled in Mexico, it may be used even if purchased after 1st April 2016.

Snyder’s-Lance Issues Voluntary Recall of 4oz Diamond of California® Chopped Macadamia Nuts and 2.25oz Diamond of California® Macadamia Halves & Pieces Because of Possible Health Risk

August 30, 2016 - From the FDA:

Snyder’s-Lance, Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall of Diamond of California® Macadamia Nuts, distributed in retail stores nationwide, due to possible Salmonella contamination.
This voluntary recall is the result of testing by a FDA-contracted laboratory which revealed that a 4oz package of Diamond of California® Chopped Macadamia Nuts contained Salmonella.
This voluntary recall covers only the following products:

  • 4oz Diamond of California® Chopped Macadamia Nuts
  • 2.25oz Diamond of California® Macadamia Halves and Pieces
The voluntary recall is limited to multiple production codes of the two products listed below. To locate the production code on the package, consumers should look on the front of the package. No other production codes, sizes or varieties of Diamond of California® products are affected by this recall.

Listeria Alert Announced For Aroma Israel Coconut Ice Drink


August 29, 2016: YeshivaWorld and Times of Israel:
Aroma Israel has reported that the lychee-coconut iced drinks may contain listeria monocytogenes. The company has stopped shipping the questionable product and the product is banned temporarily from all Aroma branches nationwide. Cleaning and disinfecting have begun at the factory in line with Health ministry directives.

In general, if you have last year’s Guide, you can use the package cutoff code for any item given in last year’s Guide and modify the date to conform to the packing dates given here for each type of grain, spring wheat, oats or barley. Just change the date and the year. If you do not have last year’s Guide, you may get it by sending email to chodosh@moruda.com. To change the date, change the year in last year’s Guide by adding 1. For oats (except those listed below) subtract 6 from the date, for wheat subtract 3 from the date, for barley, add 7 days. Note that any package with a Yoshon label is Yoshon, with the possible exception of some items where the hashgocho for kashrus in the Volover Rav.

THE FOLLOWING IS A STARTING SET OF CUTOFF DATES OR CODES AS THEY APPEAR ON PACKAGES BY MANUFACTURER. THESE DATES ARE TENTATIVE AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE (MOST LIKELY CHANGE TO A LATER DATE):

  • Quaker oats (hot cereals) Chodosh PACKAGING date Aug 31. Date on the package Feb 22 18.
  • General Mills cereals, including all Cheerios. Oats Chodosh PACKAGING date Aug 31. Date on the package Sept 6 17. Wheat in all General Mills cereals is Yoshon. (Note that the OU is working to arrange that all Cheerios sold in Israel should be Yoshon till pesach. This is to be confirmed later.)
  • Nature Valley Granola Chodosh PACKING date of Aug 31. Date on the bars (the date on the individual bars, not on the outside box) Sept 6, ’17.
  • Post cereals. Chodosh PACKAGING date for oats Aug 31, date on the package for oats is Aug 31 17.
  • Shoprite oats Jan 20 ‘18
  • Village Farms, Sturms oats Jul 20 ‘18
  • Kemach, Taanug oats Jul 20 ‘17

THE FOLLOWING OF INTEREST TO BAKERIES AND THEIR MASHGICHIM (IT RELATES TO BAKERY FLOUR, NOT THE FLOUR YOU BUY FOR HOME USE). The mills listed here may continue to produce Yoshon after these dates by special arrangement.

  • General Mills flour from Buffalo, NY may be Chodosh starting from Aug 29.
  • Ardent Mills in Albany may be Chodosh starting Aug 12.
  • Bay State Milling Clifton may be Chodosh Aug 28.

DATCP issues consumer advisory for cottage cheese produced by Westby Cooperative Creamery​ because of Possible pasteurization failure

August 27, 2016 - From the FoodSafetyNews.comA and Wisconsin Department of Agriculture:

he Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP)—Division of Food and Recreational Safety is issuing a consumer alert for 4% cottage cheese made by Westby Cooperative Creamery located in Westby, Wisconsin. The presence of active alkaline phosphatase was discovered in samples during routine testing and may indicate that the product was not adequately pasteurized.
Nearly 700 cases of product were distributed statewide in Wisconsin and to Aurora, Illinois. Consumers should only be concerned with cottage cheese sold on or before August 26, 2016 in 16-, 22- and 24-ounce containers under the Westby, Food Club, Oberweis and Shurfine brand names. The containers will contain lot code 10-6-16 cc. Consumers in possession of this product should not consume it, but should return it to the place of purchase or discard it.

Country Fresh Recalls Product Because Of Possible Health Risk

August 26, 2016 - From the FDA:

Country Fresh, LLC. of Conroe, Texas, is recalling 30,000 cases of various fresh-cut vegetable products (product descriptions attached), because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The product in question was shipped to retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia under the Country Fresh and store brand labels described in the product listing.
The product bears “BEST IF USED BY” dates between August 7, 2016 (8/7/16) through August 19, 2016 (8/19/16). The product is in either a clear plastic container as labeled below or in Styrofoam trays overwrapped with clear plastic film as labeled below. No products except those on this list are subject to this recall.
Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 281-453-3305, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. CDT.
