A single lot of Cal Delight Precooked Corn on the Cob is being recalled due to infestation issues.
The affected lot, expiration 08-15-17, has been found to be infested and it is being removed from the shelves. Consumers may return the product to the store for a refund.

OU Kosher Alert – Bill Baron’s Parmesan Panko

The Orthodox Union does not certify Bill Baron's Parmesan Panko, Bill Baron's Specialty Foods, Martinez CA. Some products sold at Whole Foods Market in the Northeast bear an unauthorized OU and are being withdrawn from the marketplace.

OU Kosher Alert – Unger’s Pearled Barley

August 15, 2016 from the OU:
Unger’s Pearled Barley (Quality Frozen Foods) limited to lot #26917 and #62318, has been found to be infested and should not be used without checking the product thoroughly. Measures are being taken to prevent the rampant infestation of the barley.

Ed. note: This infestation has been seen in the New York area

Barley Checking method (from the Star-K:

  1. Place all the barley you wish to use in a white bowl.
  2. Fill the bowl with water, a few inches over the top of the barley.
  3. Allow to sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. If there are insects present, they will float to the top.

From the COR Detroit:
Packaged barley in general may be subject to infestation during the summer months, as the packages may be stored in warehouses with excessive temperatures and eggs may hatch within the package. It is therefore recommended to check all barley, even other brands and other codes.

Salmonella Regularly Found In Poultry Sold In Israel

"Chickens sold in Israel are contaminated with salmonella but are nonetheless marketed for retail sale." Shipments of meat that are disqualified for export to Europe due to salmonella infection over 10% are commonly found for sale in Israel. "

Israel: Listeria in Milutal Frozen French Fries


August 11, 2016: YeshivaWorld:
Milutal (מילוטל) French Fries have been recalled because of detection of listeria
"The company announced that some of its product has been contaminated and a recall has already been issued as of Thursday afternoon. Any consumer with the product is instructed to refrain from eating it, but rather return it to the place of purchase."
"Company officials add that even if one was to eat the frozen chips, one would have to heat the item in hot oil and in most cases, that would eliminate the bacteria. However, consumers are urged not to rely on this."
Infected are:
  • 2kg bags from the mehadrin line with ‘permitted for use’ date up to July 25, 2017
  • 2.5kg bags for use until July 27, 2017
  • American chips 2.5kg bag for use until July 26, 2017
  • 800 gram bags of frozen potatoes for use until July 28, 2017.

Israel: Salmonella in Tahini

Shamir Salads: The Independent Lab Failed To Detect Salmonella In Tehina


August 16, 2016: YeshivaWorld:
"Prince tehina was sent to Shamir Salads accompanied by test results from an independent lab, which failed to determine the presence of salmonella. It has since been learned those tests were not conducted as they should have been."
"On July 25th, Prince sent its tehina for inspection to the Microbiological Institute in Nesher, an independent lab, which failed to detect the presence of salmonella, apparently because the inspection was not performed in line with protocol. However, an inspection conducted in the Strauss factory, salmonella was detected and they filed the results of the tests with Prince Tehina."

Salmonella Scare in Israel: Health Ministry to Sue Country’s Largest Tahini Manufacturer


August 11, 2016: JewishPress:
The Israeli Ministry of Health on Thursday ordered a halt to all sales of products containing tahini made by Prince Tahina, the largest manufacturer of tahini in the Middle East and one of the biggest in the world, amid a burgeoning scandal in Israel over salmonella found in various Israeli products.
"The bacterium was discovered on Wednesday in Shamir salads, which contains tahini made by Prince Tahina."
"Additionally, over 200 tons of Prince Tahina products are to be destroyed. The Health Ministry alleges that the manufacturer had been aware of the contamination since July 24 and that it will be prosecuted for not having reported it."

Israel on Salmonella hunt: HaNasich recalls hummus and tahini


August 11, 2016: from BarfBlog:
Tehinat HaNasich, a subsidiary of Shamir Salads, reported on Wednesday night that traces of Salmonella were discovered in samples of their raw tahini products.
Shamir has issued a recall on the following items:
  • All hummus products with expiration dates ranging from September 1, 2016 to September 18, 2016.
  • All tahini products with expiration dates ranging from September 16, 2016 to October 3, 2016.
  • All eggplant tahini products with expiration dates ranging from September 1, 2016 to September 18, 2016.
The company noted that all of their non hummus or tahini products are safe for use, as are hummus and tahini products that don’t fall within those date ranges.
