Amaranth Grain recalled in 17 states because of Salmonella contamination

August 26, 2022 from the Food Safety News and on July 22, 2022 from Bob's Red Mill. Both of these websites have detailed recall data.

Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods Inc., of Milwaukie, OR, is recalling Bob’s Red Mill brand Organic Amaranth Grain Gluten Free because of potential Salmonella contamination. The product was distributed in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington, as well as internationally in the Philippines.

Customers with any questions regarding this recall or Bob’s Red Mill products are encouraged to call the Bob’s Red Mill hotline at 800-349-2173.

Smuckers Uncrustables, all flavors, J.M. Smucker Co.:
Due to supply chain issues, the kosher certification of this product will be discontinued over the next few months. Packaging which bears the OU symbol is in fact kosher. Consumers should always verify the presence of the kosher symbol before purchasing.

Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. Issues Voluntary Recall Due to the Recall of a Raw Material from Lyons Magnus

August 25, 2022 from the FDA

Out of an abundance of caution, Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. is voluntarily recalling select dinner rolls, sandwich rolls and bun products listed below that were used in limited products made between March 21,2022 and April 25, 2022, following the expanded Lyons Magnus recall dated August 10, 2022 recall of a raw material (FDA publish date August 16, 2022), used in limited production of dinner rolls, sandwich rolls and bun products from the manufacturer of Golden Gloss glaze (Lyons Magnus). Lyons Magnus is recalling this raw material due to the potential for it to cause microbial contamination, including the organisms Cronobacter sakazakii and/or Clostridium botulinum. While no illnesses associated with Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. bread products have been reported and no pathogens have been found in Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. products to date, this voluntary recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution to ensure customer safety.

This recall does not impact any other Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. products, as no other products were produced with this raw material from Lyons Magnus.

We advise that distributors and end users in possession of any of these Piantedosi dinner rolls, sandwich rolls and/or buns immediately examine your inventory for any of the affected lot codes and place any remaining products you may have on hold. Cease further distribution of these affected products, and do not consume these affected products. Distributors and/or end users in possession of any of the affected product lots listed should contact your Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. representative to coordinate return of the product and for replacement of product. In the event you do not have any of the affected lot codes in your inventory, please retain this notice in the event any of your customers and/or end users have any questions. We advise that in the event any consumers are in possession of any of these affected Piantedosi dinner rolls, sandwich rolls and/or buns should dispose of the product. Consumers can contact Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. at 800-339-0080 x165, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00pm ET, if they have any questions, or to request replacement product.

The affected lots of Golden Gloss glaze received were used for a limited production period between March 21, 2022 and April 25, 2022. See below for the list of the affected Piantedosi Baking Company product UPC #s and lot codes.

D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co., Inc. Issues a Voluntary Recall on Market Pantry White Fudge Animal Cookies with a Best By Date of 21FEB2023 Due to Possible Foreign Object Contamination

D. F. Stauffer Biscuit Co., Inc. is voluntarily recalling 44 oz Market Pantry White Fudge Animal Cookies because they may contain metal. The product comes in a clear plastic jug formed to a bear shape. The recall affects only the following Best By Date, Lot Numbers, and time stamps, printed on the back side of the bear jug on the product label, below the nutritional panel.

The products were distributed to Target stores nationwide. No other lots or products are affected.

The recall was initiated when metal (wire) was found inside a portion of the cookies. Foodborne foreign objects that are hard, sharp, and large are more likely to cause serious injury or dental injury. Foodborne foreign objects that are flexible, not sharp, and smaller in length are more likely to cause minor injuries such as transient choking or small lacerations in the gastrointestinal system.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are urged to stop consuming the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co., Inc. at 888-480-1988, Mon-Fri, 8am to 5pm EST.

South African Kosher Updates & Alerts August 2022

August 24, 2022: From South African Beth Din:

For all bakers out there!

In South Africa many variants of commercially available flour have additives which are added to the raw product. These additives may have kosher risks associated with them.

In keeping with the Beth Din policy, all products with kosher sensitive ingredients need to be certified. Our certification guarantees that all ingredients have been checked and approved by the Beth Din. Therefore, you should always buy flour that is kosher certified.

Make sure to check the packaging for the BD logo or our website to know if your product is Kosher Certified.

Kashrus Alert: Schnuks Fruit and Nut Blend

Please be advised that Schnuks has issued a recall for Fruit and Nut Blend which was mislabeled with the wrong product name, ingredient list, and cRc logo. Rushdi Foods Issues a Voluntary Recall on One Lot of their Mighty Sesame Organic Tahini 10.9 oz Squeeze Bottle

Rushdi Food Industries, an Israeli based manufacturer, is voluntarily recalling their Mighty Sesame 10.9 Oz Organic Tahini (Squeezable) with the specific expiration date of 3/28/23 due t0 potential Salmonella contamination.

This recall was initiated when the company received a notification by the FDA and the West Virginia Department of Health of the potential presence of Salmonella in this specific lot. The company has received no reports of illness or injury to date. We immediately informed all Stores who had purchased this product within this lot code about this Recall and instructed them to remove any product which might be on their shelves.

Only packages bearing the following Lot Code/Best by date are being recalled at this time. All products other than the ones with the affected Best by Date mentioned in the table are ok to consume.

The recalled product was distributed to stores located in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as well as Wal-Mart stores nationwide during the first 2 weeks of May 2022. Based off of sales velocity, there is an extremely low chance that any of the affected product would still be available for retail. All products other than the ones with the affected Best by Date mentioned in the table are ok to consume.

Consumers who may have purchased this product are advised to discontinue use immediately and discard or return the product for credit or refund. If a consumer experiences the symptoms listed above and believes they may have been exposed to Salmonella, they are urged to report to a medical provider.

Kashrut Alert: Nargilah Grill, New York, NY.

August 5, 2022 from National Kosher Supervision:

Due to Kashrus Violations, Nargilah Grill at 1599 York Ave, New York, NY 10028 on the Upper East Side of NYC is NO LONGER under the Hechsher of National Kosher Supervision.

Nargilah was requested to provide backup receipts for purchases and was unable to do so.

Ed. note: There was a report online that they were no longer under OK Kosher Supervision. The OK stated that they "stopped certifying Nargila in July 2021."

South Georgia Pecan Co. Recalls Great Value 4oz. Walnut Chopped Pouches Due to Pouch Containing Pecan Pieces

South Georgia Pecan Co. is recalling Great Value Walnut Chopped 4oz. Pouches Lot #29329 Best If Used By April 29, 2023 due to pouches containing pecan pieces instead of walnuts. This recall has been initiated due to mislabeling issue where a packaging run of pecans was labeled as Chopped Walnuts. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to pecans run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. See enclosed product label to help in identifying the product at retail/user level.

On 8/16/2022 the firm was notified by retailer that Great Value 4oz. Walnut Chopped Pouches contained pecan pieces. The product was distributed between August 8, 2022 – August 16, 2022. This product was packaged in resealable pouches and shipped to select Walmart retail stores located in the States of: Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or they may discard the product. Consumers with questions may contact Customer Service at 1-800-627-6630; Monday – Friday 08:00am – 5:00pm ET.
