January 27, 2016 - COR Detroit: TEAVANA TEAS: Most Teavana teas are not Kosher certified at this time. Therefore, only the plain unflavored varieties, without flavoring, fruit, berries, or other ingredients, are acceptable without certification. Prepared hot tea should not be purchased at Teavana stores, even of plain unflavored varieties, due to possible brewing equipment issues. At Starbucks stores, however, hot tea is made with a tea bag placed directly in the customer’s cup, and so, the following three unflavored Teavana varieties may be purchased in a disposable cup: Emperor's Cloud and Mist Green Tea, Mint Majesty Herbal Tea, and Royal English Breakfast Brewed Tea.

Israeli Carrots now in American Stores

February 18, 2016 - KVH Kosher Twitter Feed has reported Greater Boston Area kosher consumers should note - store precut carrots may be product of Eretz Yisroel and subject to Tithing Laws.

The following Israeli produce alert is from the COR Detroit on December 22, 2015.

BELL PEPPERS FROM ISRAEL are now being sold at local stores (Meijer, Walmart, Sam's Club, etc.) and include Sunset brand, Gilad, Field & Farm, Mor and other brands of colored peppers. Consumers should carefully check the fine print on the package, or the sticker on peppers sold loose, for the country of origin. The same brand may have a mixture of some from Israel and some from other locations, so each package or pepper should be checked.
Consumers should always be careful when buying produce to check the sticker, bag label or original case for the country of origin, due to issues of Shemitah (fruit from Israel will be Shemitah product well into 2016), or of Terumos and Maaseros if it is not Shemitah product. Some additional examples of Israeli produce commonly found in the U.S. include tomatoes, carrots, citrus fruit, persimmons, pomelos, dates, and parsley.

The following Israeli produce alert is from the Kosherqust.org on December 18, 2015.

Red Peppers from Eretz Yisroel are now being found in local supermarkets. Care should be taken in regards to Terumos and Maasros. Consult with your local Halachic authority as to the proper procedure in dealing with Terumos and Maasros.

Ed. note: Kashrut.com has information on Trumos and Maasros at kashrut.com/consumer/vegetables/#TITHING.

South Africa: Some Kee Wings Cheeses Now Certified as Kosher

From the Beth Din of Johannesburg on February 11, 2016: A few weeks ago, the Kashrut division of the UOS informed the community of a number of cheese products which displayed the Beth Din logo without authorisation, made by a company called "KEE Wings" and distributed in airport lounges across the country. We are happy to announce that the company now employs a full time Mashgiach and is now sourcing kosher cheeses for 5 products in its range which are now certified kosher (Milchik, not Chalav Yisroel) under the Beth Din of Johannesburg. The company has been authorised to put the logo on the following products in its range;

  • Cheddar
  • Camembert
  • Blue Mould Cheese
  • 6 Month Matured Cheddar
  • KEE Belle
It is important to remember that the company do still produce non-kosher cheeses which will not display the Beth Din logo. Only those cheeses with the logo can be now eaten. The certified product has a Beth Din sticker that was placed by the mashgiach.

The following South African kashrus alerts are from the Beth Din of Johannesburg on January 11, 2016.

"This is a reminder that the cheeses manufactured by "Kee Ingredients" displaying the name "Kee Wings" on their packaging, contain an unauthorised Beth Din logo and cannot be eaten.
These cheeses are commonly found in hospitality venues such as airport lounges and are currently under investigation.
Their cheese range includes the following types of cheeses, none of which are currently acceptable:

  • Blue
  • Cheddar 6 month matured
  • Gouda
  • Belle
  • Camembert
We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible."
