Food News

THIS SECTION IS FOR NEWS AND INTERESTING STORIES RELATED TO FOOD, NUTRITION AND FOOD PROCESSING. THEY ARE NOT NECESSARILY RELATED TO KOSHER BUT MAY BE OF INTEREST TO THE KOSHER CONSUMER, MANUFACTURER OR MASHGIACH.

The following news is from the FoodNavigator.com on December 7, 2015.

Honey and fish were sampled in the EU for fraud. Samples of honey were found to be 19% to 32% mislabled in some way. "Almost a third (30%) of the fraudulent products had been bulked out with cheap sugar syrups. Through pollen analysis 37% had been labelled with the wrong botanical source and 10% with the incorrect geographical origin."

Fish were also sampled for fraud. "Although cod and hake represented the largest number of non-compliant samples (30 and 27 respectively), they were the most commonly-tested species. Grouper (31%), common sole (24%) and yellowfin sole (15%) actually had the highest non-compliance rates.
