June 21, 20121 - from FDA:

Prairie Wolf Spirits, Inc. is voluntarily recalling all lots of Prairie Wolf Distillery hand sanitizer packaged in 16.9 fluid ounce and 20 fluid ounce containers that resemble water bottles to the consumer level. The recall does not affect any other hand sanitizer products from Prairie Wolf Distillery. The product poses a risk of ingestion.

The product is intended to be applied topically to help reduce bacteria on the skin that could cause diseases when soap and water are not available and is packaged in 16.9 ounce (UPC 6000331899) and 20 ounce plastic bottles (UPC 6000365984) that resemble water bottles. The product can be identified by the bottle’s labels pictured below. The product was distributed to selected customers and consumers nationwide in the United States.

Prairie Wolf Spirits is notifying its customers by mail and is arranging for return or replacement of all recalled products. The product was sold from a temporary retail location located at 111 E. Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044. Additionally, it was available on the manufacturer’s website, but there were limited sales. Prairie Wolf Spirits also donated the products from its Guthrie warehouse. Consumers that have the product which is being recalled should stop using it and return it to the Prairie Wolf Spirits distillery, 124 E. Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie, Oklahoma, or discard it.

New Study Finds PFAS in Bottled Water, as Lawmakers Call for Federal Limits

June 17, 20121 - from Consumer Reports:

"'Purified' bottled water was less likely than 'spring' water to contain the potentially dangerous compounds"

"Some noncarbonated bottled water products sold in the U.S. and tested as part of a new study contained potentially toxic PFAS chemicals, prompting calls for the federal government to set standards covering the chemicals."

"The study, published in the journal Water Research and led by Johns Hopkins University researchers, detected PFAS substances in 39 out of more than 100 bottled waters tested, in some cases at levels deemed concerning by water quality experts."

"The study did not identify which brands were tested. But the researchers did find that bottled waters labeled as “purified,” which are typically filtered through reverse osmosis, contained less PFAS overall than “spring” water, which is not filtered using that method. "

"PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a chemical class that includes approximately 5,000 compounds that have been linked to cancer and learning delays in children. Used in numerous consumer products, the compounds are known as “forever chemicals” because the bonds that hold PFAS together don’t break down easily in the environment."

"The new research follows an investigation published last year by Consumer Reports that found PFAS in several noncarbonated and carbonated bottled waters, including popular brands such as Topo Chico Mineral Water. After the publication of CR’s test results, Topo Chico manufacturer Coca-Cola upgraded its filtration systems, which reduced the level of PFAS in the product."

"The Food and Drug Administration—which regulates bottled water in the U.S.—has not yet set limits on PFAS in bottled water. An FDA spokesperson says the agency is reviewing the study. But, the spokesperson said, the agency 'believes that establishing a standard of quality for PFAS in bottled water at the time would not significantly enhance the FDA’s mission of public health protection.' "

"The Environmental Protection Agency, which regulates tap water, also has yet to set standards regarding PFAS, but it has issued voluntary guidance calling on water utilities to limit the presence of PFAS to 70 parts per trillion. Some scientists believe a much lower limit of 1 ppt is appropriate."

"Overall, 19 brands tested in the Water Research study contained more than 1 ppt of PFAS."

"The International Bottled Water Association, a trade group that represents numerous bottled water manufacturers, has PFAS standards in place that its members must adhere to: no more than 5 ppt for any single PFAS compound, and a total of 10 ppt for more than one. "

"Jill Culora, spokesperson for the IBWA, says the vast majority of brands tested by the Johns Hopkins researchers contained PFAS results “well below” her organization’s standard of 5 ppt for one PFAS. Three samples exceeded the IBWA’s combined limit of 10 ppt. "

"One key takeaway from the new study is that bottled waters labeled as “purified” contained “significantly less PFAS” than spring water products, according to the study, which the researchers attributed to the use of treatment techniques such as reverse osmosis."

"If consumers are concerned about the presence of PFAS in bottled water, they should look for products that have been processed using treatments such as reverse osmosis. Purified bottled water is generally treated this way."

"The Mehadrin branch of Aroma in the Mamila Mall in Jerusalem lost its hechsher this week, as one of its staff was mechalel Shabbos and entered the premises on Shabbos to begin breaking bread."

"Chareidi residents who were on their way to daven at the Kosel saw that the store had a number of workers inside while it was still Shabbos. the passersby alerted the staff to the fact that it was still Shabbos but were ignored, and the chilul Shabbos continued."

"The branch has a kashrus seal of Badatz Chasam Sofer and Mehadrin from Rabbanut Yerushalayim. Just a few hours after Shabbos was over, the Kashrus council of Badatz publicized that their Kashrus certification was revoked pending an investigation."

"'“We want to publicize to the public that due to the opening of the branch on Shabbos, we hereby revoke our hashgacha effective immediately until we can clarify the issue.'"

"The Rabbanut also told Israeli media that “The issue was checked by the regional kashrus supervisor. The owners of the ranch have been called for a disciplinary meeting with the Chief Rabbi that is set to take place on Monday afternoon."

Israeli Archaeologists Discover Intact Chicken Egg from 1,000 Years Ago

June 9, 2021 - from the Jewish Press:

"While excavating an ancient cesspit dating from the Islamic period (7th century CE), Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologists in Yavne were astonished to find an unbroken chicken’s egg."

"Poultry farming was introduced into Israel 2,300 years ago, during the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods. In the Islamic period."

"Despite the extreme care with which the egg was removed, under the experienced supervision of a conservationist, the shell of the egg – preserved whole by the unusual anaerobic conditions – was cracked, but IAA conservationist Ilan Naor restored the egg to the state in which it was found."

Chief Rabbinate in Israel Adopts US Facon Designation

May 25, 2021 from Kosher Today:

"A strictly kosher restaurant serving lamb bacon was ordered to change the name to “Facon,” so as not to confuse customers. " "In Jerusalem’s Machne Yehuda Market, the Crave Gourmet Street Food, announced that it reluctantly changed the name of its famous lamb bacon to “facon” in accordance with a recent decision by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. On its menu are items like lamb bacon and vegan cheese. Other Jerusalem restaurants have followed suit by using vegan cheeses on their kosher burgers, as well as serving beef or lamb bacon—the latter a fan favorite that can be found on Crave’s BLT sandwich."

"The Rabbinate hopes that Facon will end the confusion."

Jerusalem Kashrut Supervisors Force ‘Crave’ Restaurant to Rename Lamb Bacon Dish

March 12, 2021 from Jewish Press:

"The Religious Council of Jerusalem last December ordered the Crave gourmet street food restaurant on Ha’Shikma Street near the Mahane Yehuda Market to remove from its menu the dish it calls Lamb Bacon, or risk losing its certification, Ynet reported this week."

"A very long list of kosher restaurants in Israel serve some imitation bacon dish, including the Burger King chain. Kosher restaurants also serve cheeseburgers with imitation cheese. In Crave’s case, the lamb bacon is not merely a gastronomical curiosity, it happens to be one of this chef restaurant’s biggest attractions, appearing on the menu both as an appetizer and a side dish with the hamburgers."

"Yoni Van Leeuwen, one of the owners, told Ynet: 'Last December, while the restaurant—like most restaurants in the country—was doing deliveries to deal with the difficulties of the Corona, the inspector of the Kashrut supervisors showed up and said that he had learned that the restaurant uses the name ‘Bacon,’ and so that people won’t associate our kosher lamb bacon with pork, they decided that restaurants with a kosher certificate should not use that word.'"

"he same inspector suggested the restaurant name its dish Fakon, which the owner found insulting. Incidentally, the same inspector had nothing to say about Crave’s cheeseburger, which is made with non-dairy cheese."

DAIRY LOBBY’S AMENDMENT 171 IS REJECTED BY THE EU PARLIAMENT

May 25, 2021 from Vegconomist

"The EU has rejected plans for unprecedented restrictions on plant-based dairy. EU leaders have dropped plans to impose new restrictions on plant-based dairy products, which could have banned them from displaying allergen information, being sold in cartons and using images of their own products. Terms such as “milk” and “yogurt” are still forbidden."

"t was confirmed today that European Parliament representatives have withdrawn the proposals from EU negotiations over the Common Agricultural Policy, after a coalition of 21 environmental, consumer and animal welfare groups called on the EU to reject them. Climate activist Greta Thunberg had also spoken out against the plans, and over 450,000 people had signed a petition calling on the EU to drop them."

EU Parliament Rejects ‘Veggie Burger Ban’ But Supports ‘Dairy Ban’ Against Vegan Producers

October 16, 2020 from Plant Based News

"The vote in support of the so-called 'dairy-ban' has been branded a major blow to the plant-based dairy sector by food advocacy organizations."

"The European Parliament has voted to reject a 'veggie burger ban' forbidding vegan producers from using terms like 'burger'."

"However, while MEPs voted against this proposal, they voted in favor of another amendment known as the ‘dairy ban’. This would stop plant-based dairy producers from using descriptive terms. "

"At this time, EU law already bans the use of terms including ‘almond milk’ or ‘vegan cheese’. However, the new rules would go further. "

"Consequently, descriptors such as 'yogurt-style' and 'cheese-alternative' could now be banned too. In addition, the rules could prevent companies from using packaging styles such as butter blocks and milk cartons."

"Currently, both votes are subject to final approval, as part of a wider vote on CAP reform later today."

"By banning any “direct or indirect use” or “evocation” of dairy products, the plans – known as Amendment 171 – would have introduced new restrictions which could have prevented plant-based dairy products from:
