This Passover Supplement has been compiled as an addition to our annual “Passover In The Jewish Home” guide book. We hope that this product supplement will assist you in preparing for the Holiday and planning your Yom Tov shopping. Information about Passover products has been gathered from a number of sources, including all of the major certification agencies in the United States, to make a “one-stop” source for product information.

Lactaid: Lactaid Milk must be purchased before Passover. Lactaid pills contain chometz and do not fall into the category of pill medication. They may not be used on Passover. If an individual who is lactose intolerant must drink milk or other dairy products on Passover, consult your Orthodox Rabbi. Most soy and rice milks, such as Rice Dream, contain chometz, and should not be used on Passover.

Laundry Detergent: Any

Lemon Juice: Must bear Passover certification Realemon, Realime are acceptable without Passover certification.

Liquor: Must bear Passover certification

Margarine Must bear Passover certification

Matzo: Charedim Shmura Matzo (cRc)

Ensure with fiber contains chometz.

Nuts: Raw nuts may be used without Passover supervision if there are no additives (i.e., preservatives, BHT or BHA.

Pecan pieces require Passover supervision. Peanuts are Kitniyos.

Oil: Must bear Passover certification

Extra Virgin Olive Oil does not need certification (This does not include LITE or Spray oils.)

Olives: Must bear Passover certification

Orange Juice (Frozen Concentrate): Any, as long as there are no additives.

Paper Goods: All are acceptable, including all paper plates, bowls and cups, all paper and plastic table cloths, as well as all paper towels. It is suggested to not use hot foods or drinks on starched paper goods. All Styrofoam products are acceptable.

Poultry (raw) All fresh or frozen raw, unprocessed poultry bearing reliable kosher certification year round are kosher for Passover except ground.

Poultry (processed): Must bear Passover certification

Hungarian Kosher (with cRc Passover)

Quinoa: There is a difference of opinion regarding the status of quinoa. All agree that it’s not chometz, but some consider it Kitniyos. According to the psak of Rav Gedalia Schwartz, shlit”a, quinoa is not kitniyos, and therefore is acceptable for Passover use. There is concern that some companies that pack quinoa also may pack other products that may be kitniyos or even chometz. Therefore, it is recommended that it only be purchased from a company that only packs quinoa. Ancient Harvest brand from Gardena, California, only deals with pure quinoa, however, only the “whole grain” quinoa may be used. Trader Joe's brand with the "half moon K", is also acceptable.Other products such as pasta and flour should not be used for Passover.

Raisins: Must bear Passover certification

Sun Sweet, Sun Maid, DelMonte and Dole

Natural and golden are acceptable.

Rice Milk: Most soy and rice milks may contain Chometz! (See “soy milk”)

Salads: Must bear Passover certification

Salt: Any, as long as there are no additives (Iodine, Dextrose, Maltodextrin or Polysorbates).

Sanitizers: Any

Scouring Pads: Any

Sesame Seeds: Kitniyos

Seltzer: Must bear Passover certification

Silver Polish: Any

Soaps All.

Soda: See Pop.

Soy Milk: Vitosoy Sansui Original Natural Soymilk is Chometz-Free, However it contains Kitniyos. This applies only to this specific brand and this specific variety, as other soy and rice milks may actually contain Chometz! By Ashkenazic tradition, this product should only be consumed on Pesach by someone whose dietary restrictions requires them to do so. Please consult your Orthodox Rabbi regarding your particular situation.

Spices: Whole: Any - (except kitniyos) Ground spices need Passover supervision

Stain Remover: Any

Styrofoam Products: Any

Sugar: Any brand white granulated cane sugar (not powdered) with no dextrose added. Confectioners sugar and brown sugar need Passover supervision.

Medications

Important: Before discontinuing liquid or chewable medicine, you must consult with your Rabbi and Doctor.

Medications contain many component ingredients, and pharmaceutical companies are very secretive about their formulations. The following listing of recommended over-the-counter medications is based on the manufacturers disclosure and other research and is as accurate as possible. This is only a partial listing; please check with the cRc office (773-465-3900) for additional information.

All prescription medications for serious illness, ordered by your doctor, should be taken on Passover without regard for the components of the medication.

Allergy, Cold & Pain Relief: ALL pill medication that one swallows is permitted without special hashgacha Afrin Nasal Sprays (All); Claritin Syrup & Tablets; Drixoral all; Motrin Children’s Cold Oral Suspension Dye Free, Children’s Cold Oral Suspension, Children’s & Jr. Strength Chewable Tablets; Nasonex Nasal Spray; Tom’s Bronchial Syrup; Tylenol Allergy Complete, Adult Liquid Pain Reliever, Children’s Suspension Strawberry, Children’s Tablets & Liquid, Children’s Cold & Cough Chewables and Suspension, Children’s Plus Cold & Cough Suspension, Children’s Cold Chew Tabs, Infant Concentrated Drops, Junior Strawberry Soft Chews, Max Strength Flu Nighttime Liquid, Meltaways Children’s, Jr; Vick’s Dayquil, Nyquil, Sinex, Vapor Inhaler, Vaposteam

Anti-diarrhea: ALL pill medication that one swallows is permitted without special hashgacha. Imodium Chewable, tablets and Liquid.

Miscellaneous: Lotrimin spray, Metamucil Kitniyos Waffers are chometz

Milk of Magnesia; Pedialite Kitniyos; Pediaflor Drops; PediaSure Banana, Chocolate, StrawberryKitniyos; Tinactin.

Vitamins: Vitamins are normally not considered pill medication, but rather a food or food supplement. As such, the p’sak from Rav Schwartz, shlit”a, is that vitamins should have hashgacha for Passover.

All Pre-natal vitamins that are taken as directed by a doctor, should be used without hesitation.

In other cases when your doctor prescribes a specific vitamin that must be taken on Passover, (even if it does not have Passover supervision) may fall into the category of a pill medication. Each situation must be individually reviewed with your doctor and your Orthodox Rabbi.

Pet Foods

The following is a list of pet foods approved for Passover 2006. Make sure to check all labels. Some acceptable varieties have names which are very similar to unacceptable formulations. There should be no chometz such as wheat, wheat starch, wheat gluten, barley, oats, oat fiber, pasta, or rye listed. A product listing both meat and dairy ingredients may not be used any time during the year. Feed available at zoos is often chometz and should not be purchased or fed to the animals on Pesach. After Pesach, pet food with chometz may be purchased only from stores which are non-Jewish owned (e.g. Petsmart, Petco) or Jewish owned but have sold their chometz. One may feed his pet any of the following items:

Science Diet: (dry) Advanced Protection Adult, Advanced Protection Senior 7+, Adult Chicken & Rice Recipe, Adult Lamb & Rice Recipe, Adult Ocean Fish & Rice Recipe, Adult Original, Hairball Control Adult, Hairball Control Light Adult, Hairball Control Senior 7+, Kitten Original, Light Adult, Oral Care Adult, Senior 7+ Original, Sensitive Skin Adult;
Science Diet canned cat food has been reformulated and contains Chometz, except for Mixit.

FISH: Fish food and Vacation blocks often have chometz. Goldfish and Tropical fish can have tubular worms, frozen brine shrimp, freeze dried worms (if they do not contain fillers).

Mixes sold in stores often contain chometz. It is advisable to mix regular and Pesach food together one to two weeks before Pesach before switching completely to Pesach food. The ratio of regular and Pesach food should be changed slowly to get the animal used to the new diet. Check with your veterinarian before changing diet.

BIRDS (PARROTS, PARAKEETS, COCKATIELS, MACAWS):

Millet, sorghum, wild bird food (check for chometz ingredients) as main diet.
