This Passover Supplement has been compiled as an addition to our annual “Passover In The Jewish Home” guide book. We hope that this product supplement will assist you in preparing for the Holiday and planning your Yom Tov shopping. Information about Passover products has been gathered from a number of sources, including all of the major certification agencies in the United States, to make a “one-stop” source for product information.

POLICY ON MEDICINES, COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES FOR PESACH FOR LAWS OF TAKING MEDICINES ON SHABBOS AND YOM TOV,MEDICINES
All pill medication (with or without chometz) that one swallows is permitted without special hashgocha. Vitamins and food supplements do not necessarily fall into this category. Please consult your Rabbi regarding your specific situation.
All liquid and chewable medications that have kitniyos may be consumed by one who is ill. However, a healthy person who only has a slight discomfort should consult with a reliable list for approved medication.
All liquid and chewable medications that have chometz or questionable chometz should not be used. Important: Before discontinuing liquid or chewable medicine, you must consult with your Rabbi and Doctor.
COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES
All varieties of body soaps, shampoos and stick deodorants are permitted for use on Pesach regardless of its ingredients.
All types of ointments, creams, nail polish, hand lotions, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, foot and face powders, ink or paint may be used regardless of its ingredients.
Colognes, perfumes, hairspray, shaving lotions and deodorants that have denatured alcohol (listed as SD, SDA, [or with a number or letter i.e. SD29C or SD40], SD Alcohol, Alcohol, Denatured Alcohol or Ethyl Alcohol) cannot be used on Pesach unless they appear on a reliable list. This only applies to products in a pure liquid state.
Lipstick, toothpaste and mouthwash that contain chometz should not be used.

By Ashkenazic tradition, this product should only be consumed on Pesach by someone whose dietary restrictions requires them to do so. Medications contain many component ingredients, and pharmaceutical companies are very secretive about their formulations. The following listing of recommended over-the-counter medications is based on the manufacturers disclosure and other research and is as accurate as possible. This is only a partial listing; please check with the cRc office (773-465-3900) for additional information.
All prescription medications for serious illness, ordered by your doctor, should be taken on Passover without regard for the components of the medication.

Milk of Magnesia; Pedialite Kitniyos; Pediaflor Drops; PediaSure Banana, Chocolate, StrawberryKitniyos; Tinactin.
Vitamins: Vitamins are normally not considered pill medication, but rather a food or food supplement. As such, the p’sak from Rav Schwartz, shlit”a, is that vitamins should have hashgacha for Passover.
All Pre-natal vitamins that are taken as directed by a doctor, should be used without hesitation.
In other cases when your doctor prescribes a specific vitamin that must be taken on Passover, (even if it does not have Passover supervision) may fall into the category of a pill medication. Each situation must be individually reviewed with your doctor and your Orthodox Rabbi.
Although the following do not have certification for Passover, they do not contain chometz: Fer-Iron Drops; NataChew; Viactiv Multi Vitamin &, Soft Calcium Chews Kitniyos; Vi-Daylin

There are many potential problems presented by pet foods all year, and even more so on Pesach. Many pet foods contain mixtures of meat and milk, which are forbidden by Torah law to derive any benefit from, including use as pet food. For Pesach we must take extra precautions since many pet foods contain actual chometz ingredients (wheat, oats, etc.).
Note: Some of the items contain kitnios, which is acceptable for animal consumption. Be careful this year for wheat gluten and milk whey found in many products.
Pet foods generally contain chametz. Please call the cRc office or consult our Web Site one week before the holiday.
The following is a list of pet foods approved for Passover 2006. Make sure to check all labels. Some acceptable varieties have names which are very similar to unacceptable formulations. There should be no chometz such as wheat, wheat starch, wheat gluten, barley, oats, oat fiber, pasta, or rye listed. A product listing both meat and dairy ingredients may not be used any time during the year. Feed available at zoos is often chometz and should not be purchased or fed to the animals on Pesach. After Pesach, pet food with chometz may be purchased only from stores which are non-Jewish owned (e.g. Petsmart, Petco) or Jewish owned but have sold their chometz. One may feed his pet any of the following items:

Science Diet canned cat food has been reformulated and contains Chometz, except for Mixit.

FISH: Fish food and Vacation blocks often have chometz. Goldfish and Tropical fish can have tubular worms, frozen brine shrimp, freeze dried worms (if they do not contain fillers).
Mixes sold in stores often contain chometz. It is advisable to mix regular and Pesach food together one to two weeks before Pesach before switching completely to Pesach food. The ratio of regular and Pesach food should be changed slowly to get the animal used to the new diet. Check with your veterinarian before changing diet.
BIRDS (PARROTS, PARAKEETS, COCKATIELS, MACAWS):
Millet, sorghum, wild bird food (check for chometz ingredients) as main diet.
Peanuts, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds can be given.
Larger birds such as parrots can eat pure alfalfa pellets (make sure it is pure alfalfa since it is common to add grains) or dry dog food (see above for list).
Smaller birds can also have pure alfalfa pellets, crush before feeding.
Can supplement with sliced grapes, cottage cheese, rice cakes (birds like these), small pieces of lean meat, matzah, berries, eggs, canned baby fruits. All large food should be shredded before serving. These items should be given sparingly.
For minerals, can have oyster shells (calcium) or mineral block such as Kaytee Tropical Fruit Mineral Block Treat.
The greater the variety, the better.
HAMSTERS, GUINEA PIGS, GERBILS & RABBITS:
Best to feed pure alfalfa pellets. Make sure it is pure alfalfa since it is common to add grains. Dried alfalfa may also be given.
Can supplement with mixture of cut-up fruits and vegetables - carrots, broccoli, grapes, apples, melon, kale, parsley, oranges, celery, dry corn, sunflower seeds, cabbage. Can also give some matzah. If not accustomed to these items, give sparingly.
Guinea pigs especially will benefit from kale, parsley and oranges.
Hamsters especially will benefit from apples.
Guinea pigs need vitamin C added to diet.
