The following kashrus alert is from the Turkish Chief Rabbinate on March 23, 2011.

"It has come to our attention that Fruit Flavored candies apparently produced in Turkey and distributed and sold in the US by Adria Imports, Inc under the name Marco Polo bear an unauthorized symbol of the Turkish Chief Rabbinate and the word Kosher. We notify the public that we have not authorized nor supervised the production of these candies. please return these candies to the seller and refrain from eating them as they are NOT KOSHER and apparently contain animal based ingedients".

The following kashrus alert is from the COR dated March 21, 2011.

Starr Culinary Delights Belgian Truffle Chocolate Cake frozen, 1.5 kg was labeled with an unauthorized COR 560 Dairy. This product is not kosher even when bearing COR 560 Dairy.

The following Canadian health alert is from the CFIA and the MK on April 4, 2011.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Amira Enterprises Inc. are warning the public not to consume certain bulk and prepackaged raw shelled walnut products described below because these products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
All raw shelled walnuts sold from bulk bins, all package sizes and all lot codes / Best Before dates of the following raw shelled walnuts and products containing walnuts are affected by this alert. The affected products were available for purchase from January 1, 2011, up to and including April 4, 2011. The raw shelled walnuts are imported from the USA. This also affects products bearing the MK Pesach label.

  • Amira Raw shelled walnuts sold from a bulk bin*
  • Amira Prepackaged raw shelled walnuts (Halves/Pieces/Crumbs)
  • Tia Prepackaged raw shelled walnuts (Halves/Pieces/Crumbs)
  • Merit Selection Prepackaged raw shelled walnuts (Halves/Pieces/Crumbs)
  • Amira Mistral Mix containing walnuts
  • Tia Mistral Mix containing walnuts
  • Amira Salad booster containing walnuts
  • Tia Salad booster containing walnuts
*The brand name Amira may not be marked on the raw walnuts sold from the bulk bins. Consumers who have purchased walnuts from bulk bins are advised to contact the retailer to determine if they have the affected product. These products have been distributed in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario. However, they may have been distributed nationally.

    The following health alert is from the FDA on March 39, 2011.

    Louie Foods International, Fresno, CA, is voluntarily recalling all Louie’s brand sprouts with a “Use By” date on or before 4/14/11, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. To-date, no illnesses have been reported. Products affected by the recall include:

    • Alfalfa Sprout Mix, 4 oz. cups (UPC 11324 04401)
    • Alfalfa Sprout Mix, 16 oz. bags (UPC 11324 16401)
    • Clover Sprouts, 4 oz. cups (UPC 11324 04406)
    • Clover Sprouts, 16 oz. bags (UPC 11324 04406)
    • Spicy Sprouts, 4 oz. cups (UPC 11325 04402)
    • Broccoli Sprouts, 4 oz. cups (UPC 11324 04407)
    Products were sold to distributors located in the Central Valley and along the Coast of California. Within hours of being notified, Louie Foods International contacted all of its customers and advised them to destroy the affected products. Consumers are urged to destroy the above listed products or to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.     The following kashruth alert is from the OU on March 31, 2011.

    New Hope Product: Ultimate Hot Chocolate, New Hope Mills Mfg. Inc, Auburn NY: This product with an OU label is certified by the Orthodox Union, but should be labeled OU-D because it contains a component made on dairy equipment. This error is being corrected.

    The following health alert is from the FDA on March 31, 2011.

    The Smokehouse LLC, Mamaroneck, NY, is conducting a voluntary recall of PORTIER FINE FOODS Norwegian Smoked Salmon of various size packages including 4 oz., 8 oz., 16 oz. and random weight sizes, Batch Code 066 only, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. PORTIER FINE FOODS Norwegian Smoked Salmon with code 066 was distributed and sold on March 7, 2011 to retailers in NY, NJ, CT. Batch Code 066 (represents Julian date of March 7, 2011) is located on a white label on the rear of gold boards, which are in clear, vacuum packed packages. This is the only batch code affected. The product was also labeled with an "EXPIRES ON" date of 3/21 (3/21/11). Since the product may be stored frozen, the likelihood exists that the affected code (066) may still be available in consumers’ homes.
    Consumers who have purchased PORTIER FINE FOODS Norwegian Smoked Salmon with code 066 should not consume it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-914-630-4788 Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EDT.

    The following Canadian milk allergy alert is from the CFIA on March 25, 2011.

    The following products from UNFI CANADA GROCERY WEST distibuted in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan are recalled because of undeclared milk:

    The following Canadian peanut allergy alert is from the CFIA on March 18, 2011 and March 25, 2011.

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with allergies to peanuts not to consume the Raw Organic Food Bars described below. The affected product contains peanuts which are not declared on the label.

    The following Chocolatey Chocolate Chip flavour Raw Organic Food Bars are affected by this alert:

    The following kashruth information is from a question to the OU on March 18, 2011 and additional information on March 23, 2011.

    Finish® Jet-Dry® Rinse Agent is certified as kosher, the OU symbol was inadvertently omitted from the new label.
    Finish and Cascade Dishwasher tablets are not certified as kosher.
    These products are coated in gelatin which dissolves first (before the soap is dispensed) depending on the water temperature
