Israeli produce is starting to appear in stores and supermarkets around the world. Instructions on how to separate Terumah and Ma’aser can be found at www.kashrut.com/consumer/vegetables.

The following Israeli produce alert is from the Chicago Rabbinical Council on December 30, 2013.

It has come to our attention that Ted’s on Devon Avenue and other stores in the Chicago area are selling produce from Israel. The latest to arrive from Israel are persimmons (http://twitpic.com/dqkar0) which have a brand name of Galilee but do not always state that they are from Israel.
While it is important to support the Israeli economy by purchasing these products, it is crucial that one take Terumah and Ma’aser. Instructions on the procedure can be found on the cRc website.


The following Israeli produce alert is from the MK on December 30, 2013.

Please be advised that peppers are being sold in stores and these products are grown in Israel. Due to the special halachot which apply to these products, consumers are asked to contact their rabbi as to how these items may be used.


The following Israeli produce alert is from the Kashrus Magazine on December 19, 2013.

Fairway is now carrying Birha Fresh Dates and Delilah Dried Medjoul Dates, both imported from Israel. Neither have any indication that terumah and maaser were separated. The dried dates are sold loose. Discuss this matter with your rabbi.


The following South African Israeli produce alert is from the Beth Din of Johannesburg on September 3, 2013.

Grains, fruits, and vegetables (and their extracts) that grow in the halachic boundaries of Eretz Yisrael are subject to many extra kashrut laws due to the kedusha (holiness) of the land. These include:

Processed foods from Israel with a reliable hechsher guarantees that all these halachic issues have been taken care of.

Fresh Produce: The Kashrut Department is now aware of the following fruit that are being imported from Eretz Yisrael and require Terumah and Ma'aser to be separated:

The following insect infestation alert is from the MK on December 26, 2013.

We hereby with to advise that the peels of garlic have been found to be infested. Prior to using garlic. remove both the outer peel and the individual peel from each clove. The garlic must be rinsed well and should not be peeled near food. Whole (unpeeled) garlic may not be used.

Chestnuts must be cracked open and examined for infestation, they should be discarded.


The following insect infestation alert is from the Insect Inspection Lab based on Rabbi Veye on December 15, 2013.

Garlic from USA, Chile and China have been inspected by The Insect Inspection Lab who found mites, possibly thips and other insects in all varieties of garlic including elephant garlic. The insects were found between the layers of the outer peels ad on the inner skin between the skin and garlic clove.
Cleaning Method:

The following kashrus alert is from KVH Kosher on December 27, 2013.

Due to recent events at the TABRIZI BAKARY in Watertown, MA KVH Kosher certification is suspended on all products until further notice For Further Inquiries Contact Us: 617-426-2139 ext. 2.

Please be advised that the Kof-K being placed on cookie trays sold by Mr. Cookie Baldwin NY without permission. This company has never been certified by the Kof-K. Corrective action has been taken by the manufacturer.

Mr. Omelette Caterers, of the Baltimore/Washington area, is advertising that they are certified by STAR-K Kosher Certification. In fact, they are not, and have never been, certified by STAR-K . Corrective action is being taken.

The following kashrus notice is from the the Atlanta Kashrus Commission on December 26, 2013.

Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Caramallows: bears an OU-D and lists beef gelatin in the ingredients. The gelatin is derived from kosher hides. Due to the processing method, poskim in the USA and Europe have ruled that such gelatin is considered pareve and may be used with dairy.

Please be advised that some sun dried tomato products, sold by NY Pasta Authority, may mistakenly contain meat and bear the CRC parve symbol, corrective measures are taken, a recall has been issued, and they are being removed from the market.
