The following kashrus alert is from Mehadrin Kashrus on June 14, 2011.

New York Beef, producer of organic beef in Poughkeepsie NY, displayed a forged certificate from Mehadrin Kashrus in NYC at their stall in Union Square farmers market in NYC. At no time have they produced product under out supervision. The New York State Kosher Law Enforcement department and the Greenmarket management are trying to resolve the issue.

In the Cereal Fruit & Nut Bars listing for Dorset Cereals on p.37, "Date & Pecan" refers to Date & Pecan Chunky Slices, which are certified KLBD Parev. This product is not to be confused with a new variety recently introduced called Date & Pecan Bar. This product is certified KLBD Dairy.

The following Houston area kashrus alert is from the Houston Kashruth Association on June 10, 2011.

Due to formula changes Nature's Best & Sunbeam breads are no longer HKA certified. Packages with the HKA ink jetted next to the expiration date were baked prior to the formula change. For alternative sources of kosher baked goods in Houston go to www.kosherhouston.org.

The following information is from Savor-The Food Agency on June 8, 2011.

A voluntary recall of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas’ Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste has been found to be based on a false-positive Lysteria reading reported by the company’s outside testing laboratory. No Lysteria was found by the FDA or another outside laboratory.


The following health alert is from the FDA on May 19, 2011.

Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, Inc., Waukegan, Illinois is voluntarily recalling lot no. 11123 of its Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall extends nationally to all states of the United States and outside the United States in Canada. This recall extends to all levels of distribution, including the retail level.
The recalled product was offered in translucent plastic one-gallon- and one-quart-size containers under the name Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste, lot no. 11123, through a variety of distribution channels including direct delivery to business customers, distributors, and retail sales. This recall does not affect Nielsen-Massey’s other products.
Customers who purchased any of the affected lot number have been urged to remove the product from sale, cease distribution, and return the product to Nielsen-Massey for a full refund or credit. Customers with questions may contact Nielsen-Massey at 800.525.PURE (7873) or 847.578.1550, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM Central Daylight Time.

The following health alert is from the FDA and the CFIA on june 6, 2011.

Simply Thick, LLC is announcing a voluntary recall of its SimplyThick® thickening gel products manufactured at a food processing plant located in Stone Mountain, Georgia since June 1, 2009. This plant is currently owned and operated by Thermo Pac, LLC. This voluntary recall is limited to only those products manufactured at the Stone Mountain, Georgia plant. Thermo Pac, LLC failed to file with the FDA a scheduled process designed to ensure that vegetative cells (harmful bacteria) of possible public health significance are destroyed during the manufacturing process.
Products affected are 15 g, 30 g, 120 g and 240 g pouches.

  • All 15 g pouches are affected
  • All 30 g pouches are affected
  • Some 120 g pouches – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
  • Some 240 g pouches – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
SimplyThick item numbers affected
  • ALL 01001, 01005, 01007, 02001, 02005, and 02007
  • SOME 01004, 02004, 01006 and 02006 – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
SimplyThick item numbers are included as part of the UPC barcode on our packaging. The item number is the second group of 5 digits in the UPC barcode.
All products have a code embossed or stamped in the foil. The first 6 digits of that code represent a “best if used by” date in MMDDYY format. ANY date code that falls between 062610 (i.e. June 26, 2010) and 062612 (i.e. June 26, 2012) and contains the letter code “TP” in the code are affected by the recall.
An example of an affected date code is: 0312125TP1. The code breakdown would be the “Best If Used By Date”, 03/12/12 – i.e. March 12, 2012 AND it contains “TP” in the code. A picture of a packet with this date code can be found on our website.
