The following health alert is from the FDA and the CFIA on june 6, 2011.

Simply Thick, LLC is announcing a voluntary recall of its SimplyThick® thickening gel products manufactured at a food processing plant located in Stone Mountain, Georgia since June 1, 2009. This plant is currently owned and operated by Thermo Pac, LLC. This voluntary recall is limited to only those products manufactured at the Stone Mountain, Georgia plant. Thermo Pac, LLC failed to file with the FDA a scheduled process designed to ensure that vegetative cells (harmful bacteria) of possible public health significance are destroyed during the manufacturing process.
Products affected are 15 g, 30 g, 120 g and 240 g pouches.

  • All 15 g pouches are affected
  • All 30 g pouches are affected
  • Some 120 g pouches – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
  • Some 240 g pouches – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
SimplyThick item numbers affected
  • ALL 01001, 01005, 01007, 02001, 02005, and 02007
  • SOME 01004, 02004, 01006 and 02006 – identified as those with a “TP” in the lot code stamped into the edge of the packet.
SimplyThick item numbers are included as part of the UPC barcode on our packaging. The item number is the second group of 5 digits in the UPC barcode.
All products have a code embossed or stamped in the foil. The first 6 digits of that code represent a “best if used by” date in MMDDYY format. ANY date code that falls between 062610 (i.e. June 26, 2010) and 062612 (i.e. June 26, 2012) and contains the letter code “TP” in the code are affected by the recall.
An example of an affected date code is: 0312125TP1. The code breakdown would be the “Best If Used By Date”, 03/12/12 – i.e. March 12, 2012 AND it contains “TP” in the code. A picture of a packet with this date code can be found on our website.

The following Canadian sesame allergy alert is from the CFIA on June 4, 2011.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Nonuttin' Foods Inc. are warning people with allergies to sesame not to consume Nonuttin' Fruit Explosion Trail Mix, Berry Delight Trail Mix, Raw and Shelled Sunflower Seeds, Blueberry Maple Granola and Cranberry Apple Granola because the affected products may contain sesame which is not declared on the label.

The following kashrus alert and notice is from the Vaad of Denver on June 3, 2011.

Corn on the Cob: Recently, kashrus agencies have reported finding insects in corn on the cob. When the husk is removed, these insects scurry inside in between the niblets. Frozen corn on the cob and canned corn do not appear to have a problem.
Guidelines to preparing corn on the cob:

  1. Do not cook with the husk on.
  2. Do not barbeque raw corn. Cook it first.
  3. Remove the husks, wash the corn, and inspect well. Do not cook what has holes or is rotting.
  4. After cooking, check the water, especially the top of the water. If insects or worms are found there, discard the corn.

Ed. note (6/15/11): The cRc and Star-K have not found infestation in the corn that they examined.

The following kashrus alert is from the OK dated June 2, 2011.

Please be advised that AZAR MOUNTAIN TRAIL MIX distributed by Mount Frankin Foods (El Paso, TX), Mistakenly bears the OK pareve symbol. This product is actully dairy and should de labeled OK-D. The product has been recalled.

The following milk allergy alert is from the FDA on May 31, 2011.

The Azar Nut Company has issued an Allergy Alert on undeclared milk in Azar Mountain Trail Mix (Item#:9613896, 2/5#) with the following date codes: 10256, 10284, 10313, 10320, 10342, 10357, 11017, 11031, 11066, 11089, 11109, 11123, 11138, 11144 as the product may contain undeclared milk. The product was distributed in Florida, Montana, Colorado, California, Oregon, Idaho, Arkansas, and Texas through various foodservice distributors. It was sold in 5# plastic bags under the Azar brand with the date codes listed above sold prior to May 26, 2011. No other Azar Nut Company products are involved in this recall. No illnesses have been reported to date. This alert was initiated after the Company's own internal labeling review process identified that the Cocoa Buttons used in the mix contained Non-Fat Milk Powder and the label did not reveal the presence of milk. Consumers who have purchased AZAR MOUNTAIN TRAIL MIX SS 2/5#-Item 9613896 are urged to return it to the Azar Nut Company for a full refund or replacement. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 915-877-4079, Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm Mountain Time.

Effective Friday, May 27, 2011, Jonas Pizza, located at 2530 Miami Gardens Drive, and Jonas Grill, located at 2520 Miami Gardens Drive, are no longer under the supervision and certification of Kosher Miami.

The following South African kashrus alert is from the Beth Din of Johannesburg on June 1, 2011.

Natures Garden Mediterranean Roasting Veg and Natures Garden French Stir Fry both erroneously carry the Beth Din logo.
Natures Choice Products have apologised for the error and shall send coupons to consumers who have bought the products if they contact them on 0800 204 7800, or via email at info@natureschoiceproducts.co.za, before the 15th of June. Please provide them with the batch code printed on the products.

The following kashrus notice from the OU in respose to a reader's question on May 19, 2011 with additional information from the OK on June 2, 2011.

Santa Barbara mango/peach salsa is certified as kosher by the Orthodox Union. That the OU symbol was mistakenly omitted from the packaging.

From the OK: OK Kosher Certification is the current supervising agency for Santa Barbara salsas. OK takes responsibility for the kashrus when bearing the OK kosher symbol on the packages.

Hershey's Cookies 'n Chocolate, Hershey Chocolate Company, Israel Importer Appearing on Label: Royalty Tasa and Jack, Holon Israel: This product is sold in Israel with a sticker placed by the importer that contains an unauthorized OU symbol. This product is not certified by the Orthodox Union and the sticker did not originate from the Hershey Chocolate Company. Consumers who see this product with an OU sticker should please contact kosherq@ou.org..
