There have been reports on the news that researchers at Oregon State Univeraity have developed Dulse, a type of seeweed that is easy to grow, is very nutritious and is claimed to taste like bacon when fried.

The following product safety alert is from the CPSC on July 22, 2015.

Teavana Corp, Seattle WA is recalling Tristan glass pitchers that can break or leak, posing laceration and/or burn hazards to consumers if filled with hot tea. This recall involves 64 oz. Tristan glass pitchers for hot or cold tea. They have a glass handle, stainless steel infuser and a lid and base that are made of flexible black silicone. The pitchers measure about 12 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter. The Teavana logo is printed on the bottom. Style #30593000064 and SKU#11034874 are printed on the pitchers’ box. Teavana has received 50 reports of the glass pitchers breaking or leaking, including three reports of lacerations and two minor burns.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled glass pitchers and return them to a Teavana store location (except for two stores: Columbia Mall, Columbia, Maryland, and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Texas) or contact Teavana for a free replacement 66 oz. infusion tea pitcher plus a $25 Teavana gift card or for a Teavana gift card for the purchase price plus tax.

An amendment to the kashrut law that would bar restaurant owners and food producers from presenting kashrut certificates by any organization other than the Chief Rabbinate is approved by Ministerial Committee on Legislation. This Bill will not affect imported foods.
"The text of the bill approved by the Ministerial Committee on Sunday states that a restaurant will be not be able to indicate in any way that it is kosher, even if it does not use the word 'kosher' and even if it states in its alternative kashrut certificate or sign that its supervision is not from the chief rabbinate. "The one concession in the bill itself to independent kashrut licensing authorities is a cause stating that a restaurant could display a prominent sign written and authorized only by the restaurant itself and no other body saying that the establishment is “self-inspected and without any supervision.”

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has published new regulations requiring that "that fish served raw, undercooked or marinated raw in dishes like ceviche must first be frozen, to guard against parasites. In March, the Board of Health approved the regulations, which now align with Food and Drug Administration recommendations and are set to take effect in August.
That means that by the end of summer all fish used in sushi, sashimi, tartare and other popular raw dishes will make a pit stop in the freezer before they end up on diners’ plates."

The following was posted on the FDA news site. The company reports that it is an old issue that has been taken care of and is no longer current

"Royal Wine Corporation of Marlboro, NY, was cited for "serious violations" of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations. FDA’s concerns included the company’s failure to consider all microbiological hazards of raw juice ingredients in its grape, apple, and cranberry juice hazard analyses."
"Royal Wine also failed to maintain records documenting the monitoring of critical control points and their critical limits for the raw juice ingredients, FDA stated, and to monitor the exclusion of pests, the protection of food, and prevention of cross-contamination."

The following news is from the Food Safety Magazine on July 7, 2015.

Food Safety Magazine tracked food recalls during the second quarter of this year. They found that misbranded and undeclared allergins were 44% of recalls and nearly 30% of the undeclared allergens were milk.
Other recalls were due to bacterial contamination.

The following news is from the Vosizneias.com and Huffington Postposted on July 2, 2015.

New York City’s ban on plastic foam is now in effect. The ban, effects restaurants, city school cafeterias, and street carts. The ban goes into effect on July 1, with a six-month grace period during which businesses won't be fined for using the containers. Businesses and nonprofits with an annual revenue of $500,000 or less can be exempted from the ban, but will have to prove that the use of materials besides plastic foam would cause them financial hardship.
The ban applies to single-use food packing products, including takeout containers and coffee cups. It also applies to so-called 'packing peanuts.'

The FDA published a document that manufacturers do not need to label major food allergens if they can prove to the FDA prior to distribution that the production process eliminates the allergenic products from the product or the allergen is present in such a low amount that it is not a risk.

The following news is from the Jewish Press on June 17, 2015.

"Six Kashrut inspectors, overseeing the Kashrut in Israeli-owned greenhouses located in Jordan were attacked on Tuesday by Jordanian workers, according to a report in Kikar Shabbat." "The greenhouses are owned by an Israeli Jew, who established them in Jordan to import Shmittah-free vegetables into Israel."
"Initially, the workers decided to hold a strike, and when the Kashrut inspectors saw that no work would be done for them to oversee, they decided to leave. That’s when they were attacked by the Jordanians."
"Two of the inspectors work for the Badatz Kashrut organization, and four work the Rav Efrati Kashrut group." The kashrus inspectors were unharmed.

The following news is from the FDA posted posted on June 17, 2015.

FDA released its final determination that Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHOs) are not Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).
FDA has set a compliance period of three years. This will allow food companies to either reformulate products without PHOs and/or petition the FDA to permit specific uses of PHOs.
It’s important to note that trans fat will not be completely gone from foods because it occurs naturally in small amounts in meat and dairy products, and is present at very low levels in other edible oils.
The FDA encourages consumers seeking to reduce trans fat intake to check a food’s ingredient list to determine whether or not it contains partially hydrogenated oil.
